Forty-eight Hours In
New York
April 25-27, 1997

Friday:
We walked about 3 miles, stopping at Papaya King on the Northwest corner of 86th Street and 3rd Avenue. We walked some more, and then we went to dinner at Rosa Mexicano (southwest corner of 58th Street and 1st Avenue). We started off with the house specialty: guacamole, prepared table side. We followed that with yet another order of guacamole. Then we had crab crepes, a special that evening. And finally, coffee gelatin with vanilla sauce (the same sauce as in floating island).
We then took a quick drive (30 minutes) to North Bergen, NJ to see Ronnie I's April show, featuring Frankie and The Fashions, The Sentinels, Eddie and The Starlites, Teddy Randazzo (lead of The Three Chuckles, and author of "I'm on the Outside Looking In", which he wrote for Little Anthony and The Imperials), Ami and The Sheps, and The Demensions. The Demensions sang "Over the Rainbow", "One More Chance", "My Foolish Heart", and some commons which were hits by other groups, such as Larry Chance and The Earls, and The Platters. The concert was outstanding.
Saturday:
We walked about 4 miles, including a stroll through Central Park. Then we had a light lunch at Daniel's (76th Street, between Madison and Park Avenues), sharing three appetizers: eggplant ravioli, crabmeat salad, and lobster salad. Delicious! Next, we went to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where we saw the Cartier exhibit, as well as the Egyptian and Impressionist exhibits. Then we walked another 3 miles, stopping again at Papaya King along the way.
We had dinner at Oceana (55th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). My friend had a crab cake and then Chilean sea bass. I had oysters and then grilled salmon. We had sorbet for dessert.
Next it was on to Radio City Music Hall, where we saw Ami and The Sheps, Felix Cavalieri (The Rascals), Ronnie Spector (The Ronnettes), Little Anthony and The Imperials, Dion, and Frankie Valli (The Four Seasons). This was an excellent concert. The high point of the evening was Little Anthony and The Imperials singing "Two People in the World" acappella. The concert was WCBS-FM's 25th anniversary celebration and was presented on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was the Saturday night concert, however, which was broadcast live on WCBS-FM.
After the concert we stopped at The Brooklyn Diner (57th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues) for egg creams. We were amazed at how busy NYC can be at 1:00 in the morning.
Sunday:
We walked about 5 miles before arriving at Provence (MacDougal Street, between Houston and Prince Streets) in SoHo. My friend had carrot soup, grilled vegetables and fresh fruit. I tried a raw sea urchin but found it too fishy. I had an appetizer of scallops, shrimp and mussels, followed by rouget (similar to snapper). We had sorbet for dessert. Then we walked about a mile in Greenwich Village before taking a cab back. It was our first cab ride since we had arrived in Manhattan. Our legs and feet were very sore, which is understandable, since we had walked 16 miles in the previous 48 hours.
