("Things You Taught Me")

Episode 12

Rina returns the key to Shinichi, saying she had no right to hold on to it. She seemed to have finally reconciled herself to reality, and says to him that she'd always wanted to be the one to help Shinichi, and through him, maintain a link with her dead sister. She tells Shinichi that even though he and Muki never got married, she still considered him to be her elder brother. Shinichi tells her that he's has finished his teaching contract, and will be returning to Hakodate to the research centre there to continue his work on autism. Rina is somewhat taken back by his move, and asks him, "what about Mayuko?"

Mayuko goes to WeatherWorld, and all her former co-workers there seem to be glad to see her. The new "work-plan" is for her to work from home; they'll pass her the relevent documents and she can email them her analyses etc., and she only has to go into work for the weekly group meeting, and in emergencies like during a typhoon, etc. They also tell her that once she gets her weather-forecaster qualifications, they will hire her on to their permanent team. (I guess all along, she's been an "intern" at their co.) As Mayuko leaves the office, she notices a group of them gathered together to discuss the direction of oncoming typhoon, and she offers her own opinion (that it may turn west) when a fax comes in from the weather bureau, with the same prediction.

Sakuma goes to see Shinichi, who is apparently leaving for Hakodate tomorrow. Sakuma's really enthusiastic, saying that the research centre could really be of help to Shinichi's work, but Shinichi seems ambivalent, and Sakuma asks him if it's because he lacks the confidence to return to medicine. Shinichi says that it could be because the decision was made so suddenly. Sakuma then asks him if he's still thinking about Mayuko, and says that it's thanks to Mayuko that he's been motivated to resume his medical work, and it's also because of her that he is now pursuing his studies on autism. Sakuma then asks Shinichi if he'd ever considered where he'd be right now, if he haven't met Mayuko...

Yohei's learning how to eat on his own, and is getting very frustrated over his ineptness, so Mayuko suggests going outside to improve his mood. As she's wheeling him around the hospital grounds, she tells Yohei about resuming her job at WeatherWorld and how well she's coping on her own and not troubling others. Yohei tells her not to say that anymore, saying that he himself is a lot of trouble to other people.

As Mayuko wanders off to look at the sky, Osata-sensei comes up to Yohei and comments how he wouldn't be able to forecast the weather like that, and Yohei agrees that he couldn't either. Osata-sensei then draws an analogy between the fable about the frog at the bottom of the well being ignorant of the ocean outside, just like how they have no knowledge of the skies. He says that Mayuko, however, seems to have the gift of being able to "read the skies". Mayuko returns to Yohei's wheelchair, and Osata-sensei mentions to her about Shinichi going off to Hakodate.

Shinichi runs into Mayuko in the hospital hallway, and takes her to meet his study group. They ask her to talk to them about herself. Mayuko tells them that she likes things that glitter, and how she really likes the sky - but she knows that when she becomes too absorbed in her favourite things, she will seem very strange to other people, but she's not sure if being strange actually causes trouble to others. Because she likes the sky, she likes to do weather forecasting work, and how weather-forecasting does not cause trouble to others because she can help other people in their work. And she hopes that through this, she can start to live like everyone else, and gain understanding in what she didn't understand before, and accept what she used to find unacceptable. But then she worries that by doing this, she will lose the "real her", and she concludes that the most important thing is for her to be herself.

As they leave the hospital, Shinichi tells Mayuko that your individuality ("kosee") is basically your own sense of self ("jibun-rashii") and that is something that is very hard for others to understand. Mayuko asks him what his "jibun-rashii" is, and he says "paying attention to only his own matters", and Mayuko adds "...holding fast to one's own lifestyle." Shinichi then says (half to himself) "At times, even things that one really wants to do..." but he doesn't get to finish his sentence because Mayuko cuts him off saying she has to go because she suddenly remembered that she's going to start working for WeatherWorld from home. Hearing this Shinichi is very happy for her and tells her to "ganbatte". She says she believes that she'll be able to continue working herself on her own... ("hitori de mou ganbari sonna ki ga suru")

At the park, Chihiro is on the swings while Jun watches her moodily. She's having a lot of fun and says to Jun that she understands now why Mayuko loves coming here so much. Jun tells her not to say that so easily as it's not easy to understand Mayuko... he then tells her that recently, Mayuko keeps saying that "things are fine as they are right now..." ("sono mama ii") which he finds kind of puzzling. Chihiro says that she wishes someone would say that to her, because then it would mean that the person really understands her. She then turns to Jun and says it to him.

At the hospital, Osata-sensei is talking to Shinichi, and he says that Mayuko is like a bridge between them and the (autistic) patients. He says that he heard Shinichi was going to Hakodate to the research centre there, but Shinichi hedges, saying "...it's not decided yet..." but Osata-sensei tells them that their former professor (the hospital chief) is really looking forward to seeing Shinichi again.

Jun walks into Mayuko's bedroom and sees her playing with her trinkets, and he loses his temper, telling her to stop playing with such things. Mayuko flinches from his harsh tone and asks if Jun dislikes her. Jun says that of course he doesn't, but then asks if her trinkets are really that important to her. She tells him that they give her a sense of peace. He then asks her what the most important thing is to her, and she replies that it is who she is when she is with Shinichi... and also who she is when she is watching the skies, or forecasting the weather, or playing with her trinkets... Jun comments that in that case, the most important thing to Mayuko is herself. Mayuko asks Jun if he isn't the most important thing to himself, and he tells her he doesn't know what his self really is. Whenever he thinks about what he should be living for, he would feel like he has lost his sense of self. Mayuko comments that it could be because Jun has two fathers.

Meanwhile, Shinichi is trying to compose an email to Mayuko telling her about his impending trip to Hakodate, but he can't seem to be able to word it right and he gives up...

Mayuko leaves for WeatherWorld, telling Akiko she'll be back before the typhoon becomes really strong. Akiko says that Jun has also gone out today, but when Mayuko asks where, she just asks Mayuko to come back early.

After Mayuko leaves, Shinichi calls her house, but of course she's gone to work. It's time for him to go to the airport, so he quickly dashes off a note to her saying that he's going to Hakodate and he's considering taking up medicine there again, and when he returns that evening, he'll contact her.

Jun visits Takuma in jail and asks Takuma if he thinks he should still consider living with the Amemiyas. Takuma asks if Yohei is treating Jun like his real son, and Jun answers that he does...which makes him feel worse for not being able to do anything for Yohei. He wonders why things have turned out this way, and says to Takuma that he wished he'd confessed 18 years ago. Takuma replies that it's because he didn't want Jun to become the son of a criminal, and he hoped that Jun could lead a good life and not follow in his footsteps.

Mayuko comes home that evening, and sees Shinichi's email, and rushes out again, but Jun holds her back. (It's really stormy at this point.) But Mayuko says that Shinichi has said he would be returning that evening. Akiko gets off the phone with Shinichi and tells Mayuko that he's not coming back tonight because it's too dangerous with the typhoon. Jun asks Mayuko if she's known of Shinichi's going to Hakodate, and she said that she didn't , but she insists that he'd told her before that he wouldn't leave her. Jun replies that he wouldn't let them be together anyway, and there's no way Mayuko would be able to live with Shinichi in her current condition. Mayuko repeats that she wants to see Shinichi and there's a lot that she wants to tell him, like how her work's going so well, and how she's learning what it means to be true to herself... She said that Shinichi told her before that she would not have to be on her own ("hitori ja nai...") and he'd help her find a place that she belongs... and that he also said that it's fine where they are right now ("ima koko ni itte iin datte"). Jun asks her if she really trusts Shinichi, (and she says yes)... and Jun adds "...whereas he [Jun] hadn't trusted Mayuko." (Mayuko tells him that she trusts him though.) Jun then says that all along, he hadn't paid any attention to Mayuko's feelings, he'd just kept saying he'd protect her. But in fact, that means he hadn't trusted Mayuko and he also hadn't realised how much Mayuko trusted Shinichi.

Mayuko braves the storm and lets herself into Shinichi's house, but of course it's empty. As she stays there on her own, she thinks back about her past times with Shinichi and the many things that he had taught her... The next day, the storm passes, and Shinichi arrives home to find Mayuko asleep on his couch. She wakes up and hugs him, asking him if he's really going to go somewhere far away.

At the hospital, Jun asks Yohei why he was taken to their home, and was it because he was Takuma's son or because he was needed as a successor for Yohei's business. Yohei says yes, but he doesn't think that way anymore, and Jun can now do whatever he wants to do. Jun asks if he really means it, that he doesn't have to take care of Mayuko, or the family business. Akiko adds that it doesn't matter whose child Jun is, or what the reason is that he was brought to their home - to her, she's just grateful to have him as her son.

At the park, Shinichi tells Mayuko that he didn't mean to keep Hakodate a secret from her, but it's just that he hadn't made up his mind and he didn't want to tell her too soon. Mayuko asks if he really has to go, and what will happen to her. Shinichi says that it's up to her to decide. Mayuko mentions Shinichi's yakusoku to her about how she would be able to find her own lifestyle, and she then adds that while she thinks she can understand her own personality, she's still not sure what "love" is. She says that when she was alone at Shinichi's house last night, it felt that her soul was crying out. She says she knows that without Shinichi, there will be much sorrow, and with him, there will be much happiness. She wants to be with Shinichi forever, to share all the feelings of sorrow and happiness... Shinichi is moved by her words, and says he too wants to share his happiness and sorrow with Mayuko. Mayuko wants to make sure that Shinichi will always be by her side, and she reaches out and holds on to his shirt-tail. Shinichi says that if she still hasn't found out what love is yet, then they would go look for the meaning together. He asks her to go with him to Hakodate, and she agrees, leaning into him and saying that she is not on her own anymore.

Mayuko's monologue: With the passing of the storm, my heart feels cleansed. Now, within me, there's only a light that is shining through and this light gives me the energy to go on. A trusting heart will overcome all obstacles.

It's August, and Mayuko's upstairs in her bedroom packing the last of her stuff to Hakodate, and Jun and Shinichi are helping her move the boxes. Downstairs, her family is gathered in the living room, and Jun comments about how if he didn't have to study, he'd be able to go visit them in Hakodate, and that without Mayuko in the house, it'll be lonely. Akiko then asks if Mayuko will be coming back to take the weather forecaster's qualification exam, and Mayuko answers that she will be, and also to meet with her co-workers at WeatherWorld. Jun says that it's so fast by plane anyway, and Yohei agrees, telling her that she should come home anytime she feels like it. Akiko jokes that he shouldn't be encouraging his daughter to constantly return to her former home, but Yohei says that it's ok, she can come back anytime she wants. Mayuko gets up and thanks them all, one by one.

The final scene is with Mayuko and Shinichi at the park. They're holding hands, spinning each other around but Shinichi gets dizzy (Mayuko never seems to, though!) and sits down. Mayuko holds her hands out saying "mou ikai" (again) but he pulls her down instead and gently kisses her, first on the tip of her nose, then on her lips. Some kids come by at this point, and they get up and walk away, smiling...
