African pygmy dormice, commonly referred to as micro-squirrels, are very adorable, with huge expressive eyes and full bushy tails.  Full grown, they reach the size of an adult mouse, but without the offensive odor.  They are fairly low maintanence and do not require a great deal of space.  They are also a very hardy species and do not have ailments commonly found in the rodentia family (such as upper respiratory infections).  Due to the fact that they are an exotic species, they have different care requirements than small household pets that are more common, such as hampsters or gerbils.

We, at The Dormouse Breeder, are home based hobbyist breeders, so we have more time to spend with our individual babies than would a mass producer or pet shop.  Our babies are handled each day for at least half an hour so that the dormice you get from us are better socialized.  We are planning on removing the offspring from our next litter at two weeks of age in order to hand nurse them, we will see how it works out.  If all goes well, then we will try to hand rear all of the young from our future litters.  We only breed two to three litters per year, and we will try to keep updated pages with information and pictures on each of our breeders and litters.  We try to work with as many fresh bloodlines that are available to us.  Currently, we have one male and one female from a private breeder in Indiana, one male offspring of the previous mentioned, one female from Florida, and a few on the way from a breeder in Illinois and Three from down in Texas.
We do screen each individual that inquires and will only place our babies with those who fit our requirements.  Please be sure to read our
information on dormice and care requirements before inquiring, which is a part of our requirements.  Otherwise, please enjoy looking through our website.  You will find several pictures and some great information on dormouse care.
