Caramba! - Nina Marie Martnez Several residents of Lava Landing, CA, including a witch, a mariachi, a man stuck in purgatory, and a transvestite hair dresser weave their way into one another's lives. As a sidenote, I have to say this book is lots of fun, partly because the first page of every chapter is in color! The Dark is Rising - Susan Cooper A young British boy discovers his destiny is to save the world from the evil magic of the Dark. I read this book for the first time in seventh grade and then again last summer, and I still thought it was an excellent, suspenseful read. Girl with a Pearl Earring - Tracy Chevalier Maertge goes to work as a maid in the house of a famous painter and gets caught in an awkward situation. The Giver - Lois Lowry Jonas becomes the next Receiver, the keeper of all good and bad memories that society has been sheltered from, and learns to deal with pain. The Green Mile - Stephen King Paul Edgecombe, a prison guard, meets John Coffey, an inmate on death row who has a special gift. This is my favorite book. I can't recommend it strongly enough! Bring your kleenex. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - J.K. Rowling Harry Potter, a young wizard in his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, competes in the Triwizard cup and continues to battle the evil Lord Voldemort. Homes and Other Black Holes - Dave Barry Dave Barry's hillarious manual designed to help you successfully select and move into a new home. Complete with illustrations. I have never laughed so hard in all my life. Into The Wild - Jon Krakauer Chris McCandless, a young man from a well-to-do family, abandons his life and walks into the Alaska wilderness. I really can't describe the way I felt about this book - the main character is fascinating. The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants - Ann Brashares Four best friends share a pair of magical pants during their first summer apart. It will make you feel like a kid again. Standing in the Rainbow - Fannie Flagg A kind mid-western woman named Dorothy plays a part in the lives of her neighbors; the story follows her family, neighbors in Elmwood Springs, and friends from 1940 until her death. This book is amazing! They Cage the Animals at Night - Jennings Michael Birch Jennings Michael Birch recounts his childhood in and out of orphanages. A true story. The Things They Carried - Tim O'Brien Tim O'Brien loosely bases this story about a group of soldiers fighting in Vietnam on his own experiences in the war. Utopia - Sir Thomas More A man who has seen the world tells colleagues of his about his adventures and of the utopian society he observed while abroad. This one takes a little discipline to get through, but you'll feel so intelligent for having read it. Promise. Next on my To Read list: Run With the Horsemen - Ferrol Sams If you are interested in reading for fun, definitely stop by Randomhouse and have a gander.
