I realy like this game - and it's not easy! I have used a lot of time playing it but have never caught any big fish. The game is old but it has a lot of unique features like:
- A moskito spray
- A camera to take pictures of your fish
- A note book
- A statistic feature
This is one of the first fishing games to the PC that makes use of high-end vector graphic. It runs in DOS mode, but uses a fine "windows like" interface.
The game was released with a tackel box and a map showing the lake. Later it was re-released by Europrees in a white box and a jowel case version. I found a copy of the jowel case version in Denmark for only 10 Dkr - about $1.50!
Amtex has now closed down but the game is still sold. I know of 4 versions of the game.
The game is simular to games like Sierra's Trophy Bass and EA's TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament 96.
The game has only one lake - you are fishing on the "Bay of Quinte" in Canada, and even though the angler on the box-cover on the Europress version stands with a big salmon in his hands - there is no such fish in the game!
The lake is very big with a lot of named fishing spots to locate.
You can catch the following speches:
- Pike
- Largemouth Bass
- Smallmouth Bass
- Perch
- Sunfish
- Walleye
- Musky
- Catfish
Game setup
First you have to selected if you want to start a new game or resume an old one. If you starts a new one it's time for setting up the conditions and the level in witch you want to fish:
In the "Angler" setup you give your angler a name and select the level of luck and the level of skils.
In "Site" select you can only select "Bay of Quinte", I don't know if there ever was mad any extra sits to the game.
In "Date" you can select the day in the months from May to September in witch you want to fish.
Starting
Before starting your fishing trip you can go to the Lodge and have a look at the "Hall of fame" or you can get hints from the old man or se if there are any god stories in the old newspapers.
Then you go to the bait shop where you can buy all the tackel you need - there is over 30 differen lures to choose from and they are all showed with nice pictures and hints that tells you how to use them. And rembember - it the place to buy the moskito spray too.
Gameplay
Before you can start fishing you must select the tackel you want to use. If you need help you can ask your "Fishing Buddy" for help. You got 3 reels, rod's and lines to chouse from.
Navigate
Now it's time to find a good place to fish. Place the target on the map and press the engien icon the your boat will start moving. When you arrive to your selected spot switch to the "cast and reel" view and navigate your boat with your trolling motor while watching the sonar for fish.
Casting and reeling
Castin your lure thakes a little practice to learn. Hold down L-MB on the reel bottom icon and move the mouse first back and them forward (fast or slow dependen on how far you want to cast) and then release the MB.
If you don't read the electronic manual you will get problems when you are to reel in your lure. You must hold down L-MB on the reel icon while clicking on the R-MB - you uses two buttoms at the same time!
When reeeling your lure in, keep an eye on the lure speed. The green endicater shows the optimal speed for the selected lure.
Setting the hook
You set the hook while you are reeling in. If you are fising with a natural bait, you can let it stay at the bottom and wait for a fish to bite.
Fighting
You reel in the fish. If the line gets near the yellow/red tension mark - you must ajust the drag level. You also have to use the rod position if you are fighting a big fish.
Landing
The fish is automaticly landed when it get close enough to the boat. You can then take a picture of it to your album and then you can keep it or release it.
Other stuf
I have got a lot of question about a Derby mode you should be able to enter. I have never seen it and im not sure if it was ever made. It's also strange that the game only have on lake but I don't belive that any more was ever made.
