Goals of the Course

Gain a basic understanding of how the Internet was formed.
Understand the following networking concepts: LAN/WAN, Seven Layer OSI Model, TCP/IP.
Gather an overview of the following core technologies of Data Networking:
Common Services: HTTP (web), SMTP (email), FTP (file transfer), DNS, DHCP, chat, telnet, ssh
New/Upcoming Services: VoiceOver, Video Streaming, Video Conferencing
Routing Protocols:
Distance Vector: RIP, IGRP
Link State: OSPF
External Routing: BGP, iBGP
TCP/IP Protocol Stack: TCP, UDP, ICMP, ARP, SNMP MIBs
Common LAN Concepts: MAC Addresses, IP Addressing, IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet)
Common WAN Concepts: Frame Relay, ATM, HDLC, PPP, PAP/CHAP, X.25
Understand what companies, agencies, and organizations are helping to build the Internet today.
Have an ability to discuss the pros/cons of the Internet and why it will change the way we work, live, play, and learn.
