The Gillespie Clan Motto

A three masted ship, sails furled and flags flying, A

cross-crosslet fitchee, and a dexter hand and Wrist fessways

couped above the wrist, the hand Holding a dagger erect. Above

a cat-a-mountain, sejant guardant and erect.

The hand and dagger granted by King Robert I (The Bruce),

King of Scotland, for taking back their own lands from the

Cummings, who had previously killed the Gillespie chief and

taken the lands.  The Crusaders Cross for their part as leaders,

with Sir James Douglas, in carrying the heart of Robert

Bruce into battle against the Moors.

The cat and motto signify association with the ancient High-

land clan of Chattan.  In fact, an early Chief of Clan Chattan

Association was a Gillespie.
