In our post-modern world the values that Americans have fought and died for have been slowly eroded and replaced with relativism and "sensitivity". Our culture today dictates that the virtues of the past are now outdated, ancient relics from a bygone era. Truth is out, the new tolerance is in. Moral integrity is out, phobias are in.
This section describes some of the meanings for the "code words" and phrases of our culture. These are words that have always had a certain meaning but have now taken on a new and different meaning based on our post-modern world. Possibly no other word has been re-defined more than the word tolerance. According to our culture today, tolerance is the number one virtue to live by. So what does tolerance mean? In the pure and original use of the word, tolerance has always meant that if someone disagreed with you, you tolerated it. In other words, you "put up with it." You didn't kill the person that disagreed with you but you certainly didn't change your beliefs just to keep from hurting another persons feelings. In other words, to be tolerant of another persons view meant that you might not have agreed with the other persons view, but because that person has the right to believe whatever he wants, you were tolerant of the other persons right to believe whatever they want to believe.
In our culture today, tolerance no longer means what it has always meant. To be tolerant today means that you must not disagree with another persons view or beliefs. You must not ever tell another person they are wrong. And you must not ever tell someone that your view is true and their view is false. This is the new tolerance. The new tolerance states that you must accept every view and belief as being true and equal. And if you don't? You are then labeled the dreaded intolerant. If you believe that homosexuality is morally wrong, not only are you intolerant but you also have a phobia. And if you disagree with abortion, you are not only intolerant but you are an "attacker on freedom".
Our tolerant, sensitive, politically correct culture has these "code words" for us to follow:
