Free Translation.com: Designed to give a rough translation of Web text between English and a variety of other languages. You can also translate a whole page by entering the URL in the Web Translator tab. And for giggles, you can see what English pages look like in Norwegian. Oensk velkommen til Dave Pelland.com!

The U.S. Geological Society's Place Names Database: You can look up how many places or geographic features share your name, or how many names contain ethic slurs.

Lou Holtzman's page: The family of New York recording engineer Lou Holtzman (my brother-in-law's uncle) has owned a Lower East Side tenement building for four generations. Now New York state is threatening to take it over through eminent domain to expand the Lower Eastside Tenement Museum next door. So they're willing to kick out today's immigrant families and shut down an active apartment building to help demonstrate the immigrant experience of 100 years ago. Like New York has an abundance of affordable housing.

NASA's online history of the Apollo program: Apollo 13 is listed as a "Lunar Swingby." Sounds like a hoot.

Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale: Their roadside seafood restaurant in Madison, CT, is home of the finest lobster roll in New England. Made the proper way, with melted butter instead of mayo. Ick...mayo should never desecrate lobster meat. But I digress. Fish Tale is open year-round, but shines in summer with a kids' carousel and outdoor picnic-table dining. Bring a tablecloth, some beer or wine, some candles, and you've got a party.

The official U.S. Time Clock site: What time is it, Mr. Clock? The U.S. Naval Observatory knows, give or take .2 seconds.

Lighthouse Explorer Database: From Lighthouse Digest. Contains info and photos of more than 2,400 lighthouses around the world, including a few that aren't around anymore.

The Food Network: Eat at my house, the odds are good that a recipe came from the database at this nifty site.

Forgotten New York: A fascinating look at traces of New York's history that survive today, such as old ads painted on buildings or abandoned subway stations that were converted to retail stores.

The Gallifreyanguy Pages: My cousin and her husband, who've moved from greater Boston to Los Angeles.

KPMG Insiders: Daily e-mail newsletters covering the electronics, banking, insurance, consumer markets, health care and pharmaceutical industries.
