Larry Bingham and I have a 16 yr. old daughter, Sara, in high school. I remarried
10 years ago to Rich Harris who works at Varian (Imaging Products). For 6
years now I've been at MBA Architects in Willow Glen as their office
administrator. Previously I worked 15 years for Singer, Link Flight Simulation,
in Sunnyvale in Personnel as their Benefits Administrator before the plant
closed and moved its operation to Binghamton, NY. Enjoying golf and the joys
and sorrows of raising a teenager.

Here is some scoop on a DPI customer: Litton agrees to buy rival shipbuilder
for $529 million in cash NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Litton Industries Inc. will buy
Avondale Industries for $529 million after Newport News Shipbuilding declined
to raise its offer for the shipbuilder. Litton also indicated Thursday it
plans to re-examine its offer to buy Newport News in light of potential
government opposition. New Orleans-based Avondale had agreed earlier to merge
with Newport News for $470 million in stock. But Litton offered more in cash,
ultimately enticing Avondale. Avondale had given Newport News until Thursday
to improve its bid, but the Virginia-based company decided against such a
move. ``We thoroughly reviewed the issues and determined that it was not
in the best business interests of our shareholders to raise our offer for
Avondale,'' said William P. Fricks, the chairman of Newport News. Shares
of Litton rose on the news, increasing $2.12 1/2 to $69.06 1/4 the New York
Stock Exchange. Shares of Newport News were down 50 cents to $28.37 1/2 on
the Big Board, while shares of Avondale fell 21 7/8 cents to $38.09 3/8 on
the Nasdaq Stock Market. The Newport News-Avondale combination was apparently
doomed last Friday when Defense Secretary William Cohen said the Pentagon
would probably tell the Justice Department to reject the Woodland Hills,
Calif.-based Litton's $1.3 billion bid for Newport News for anti-competitive
reasons. At the same time, Cohen said the Navy had determined it would not
oppose Litton's offer for Avondale. The Litton-Newport News deal would have
reduced the number of companies competing to build most classes of Navy warships
from three to two. Litton said Thursday it hasn't given up on acquiring Newport
News, even with the statements by Cohen. The company did not elaborate. Litton,
which owns Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., made its bids for Avondale
and Newport News earlier in May after Cohen rejected an attempt by General
Dynamics Corp. to acquire Newport News. Litton had originally bid $38 a share,
or about $500 million for Avondale, but later sweetened its offer to $39.50
a share. Tom Kitchen, Avondale's chief financial officer, said no layoffs
were planned and the company was optimistic that more jobs could result from
the merger. The two companies expect it will take about 90 days to finish
the merger, which must be approved by the federal government. ``We're talking
about evaluating the resources and capacity of both Ingalls and Avondale
and putting them together in a way to expand in both locations,'' Kitchen
said. Ingalls employs about 11,000 workers, while Avondale has about 6,000.
The combined Litton-Avondale company would employ 40,000. Avondale, a non-union
yard, has been engaged in a six-year fight to avoid having to recognize the
Metal Trades Council of the AFL-CIO. The company, which is challenging a
union representation vote held in 1993, has taken the case to a federal appeals
court. A decision is pending. ``Anybody buying Avondale would be an improvement
potential for the workers,'' said Jim Evans, a union organizer. ``But we're
just in a wait-and-see position.'' At Ingalls, two unions on strike were
scheduled to vote Thursday and Friday on contract offers. If the contracts
are approved, workers will return to work Monday after three weeks off the
job.
