Deborah trudged home in the depressing weather. It had rained for several days straight without a glimpse of the sun. The young woman was looking forward to getting home and resting, away from the constant rain. She dragged herself up the hill to her house, which was located on the top of the accursed hill. Her day had been one of the worst in her memory. All she wanted to do was to sit down and relax. When she finally reached the safety of her warm house, she thanked the stars. Tossing her rain soaked school bags and coat on the floor, Deborah wandered into the kitchen, thinking to get something warm to drink. Taped to the door of the fridge was a note, left by her mom. Deborah leaned closer to read it. I'll be home late tonight. Meetings at work, drinks with friends after. Don't wait up. Mom "Yes!" Deborah cried, and did a little jump of joy. "Since Mom will be home late, that means I can go visit my bondmates!!" The girl ran as fast as her legs would carry her to her room. Once inside, she locked the door and closed the blinds. If her mom did get home soon then she would just think her daughter was sleeping, or so Deborah hoped. One more glance around the room assured her that all was secured. Sitting on a shelf covered in books was a wooden box. But not just any box, a trick box. It looked, at first appearance, that it could be opened just by lifting the lid. But when someone tried, they would realize it was locked. She laughed, knowing that they would never be able to find the key, or the key hole. She knew, she had tried it on one of her friends. First, one of the wooden slats came out on the bottom. Inside was the key. A few more slats painstakingly removed reveled the key hole. Once it was open, Deborah reached inside, and pulled out her most prized possessions. It was a large leaf, carved out of a single green stone. It was slightly translucent, and very detailed. The leaf had been given to her by Fae, an elf who lived in the other world. The other world was… well, the other world. She had first discovered it when Fae had been practicing opening portals, and she had fallen into it. After talking for a time, Fae had agreed to show her around. Eventually, she had discovered that there were many dragons populating this world. So many that their eggs were being given to people to take to different places to raise. The dragons, when they hatched, the dragons and person formed a bond. Hence, the term, bondmates. Deborah had become intensely interested in adopting dragons, so she had set up a large forest in which the dragons could live. This forest had tons of strange things in it, things you wouldn't think to find in a forest. A beach, mountains, lakes, rivers, caves, and a ton of other places. And so, Deborah had started her bonding. After school, everyday, she would come back to the forest, and visit all of her dragon friends. Deborah placed the leaf on the floor in front of her, then stepped back a pace. She closed her eyes in concentration, summoning her tiny bit of magic. The green leaf glowed, the light expanding outwards, engulfing the girl. When the light faded, both girl and leaf were gone. |
