Dragons abreast began from a seed at the 2000 National Dragon Boat Championships at Penrith in Sydney. Nine survivors of breast cancer paddled with a sydney team to promote Breast Cancer awareness. Each of those women went home to their local communities with the idea of developing Dragons Abreast as a national team.In May 2001 Dragons Abreast Australia went to the national titles in Darwin. Members from Armidale, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Newcastle & Sydney made up the National team.

We
competed in the women’s and master’s races and at the end of the day held the inaugural AusDBF Dragons Abreast Division. Teams of eight women paddled to represent Northern Territory, New South Wales & Queensland / Australian Capital Territory. This was the culmination of a wonderful week for members of the team. Tremendous support was given to the Dragons Abreast members by all the paddlers and supporters present on the day resulting in an emotional experience to remember.

Since that time Dragons Abreast Australia members have travelled to Toronto, Canada to paddle in a team of international breast cancer survivors known as Internationally Abreast. On the local scene there has been more growth and the development of teams in new areas. Members travelled to Newcastle, NSW for the 2001 Masters Games were three teams of Dragons Abreast competed. Teams in Brisbane/Gold Coast, Newcastle, Central Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth currently compete in local competition.
At the 2002 AusDBF National Club Championships held on the Hinze Dam behind the Gold Coast over 80 ladies and one man paddled in teams representing many of the states of Australia. That's 1000% growth in paddlers for Dragons Abreast Australia in just two years. Were can we go from here?
