PYORRHOEA OR PERIODONTITIS
WHAT IS PYORRHOEA OR PERIODONTITIS ?
PYORRHOEA or periodontitis as it is known, is the silent killer
of teeth ,since even when the disease has progressed to a advance
stage the patient sometimes do not have much discomfort except occational
bleeding from the gum. This is the reason why patients take it lightly
and the disease progresses till the tooth is lost.
WHAT IS PYORRHOEA? :It is a disease of the gums in which
the supporting structures of the tooth, like gums, bone ,and peridontal
ligaments are destroyed ,leading to loosening of tooth and finally
tooth loss.
HOW IT BIGINS AND PROGRSSES
This disease starts when PLAQUE
remains sticking to the tooth (specialy near and below the gums)
because of improper cleaning of tooth (by brushing and flossing
) .This PLAQUE if left uncleaned will slowly become hard by the
deposition of mineral , organic and inorganic content present in
the mouth (specialy saliva).this hardened and solidified plaque
is known as TARTAR OR CALCULUS, and is the main cause of pyorrhoea
. the tartar once formed will keep on building up , it is very adherant
in nature and dosen't get cleaned by normal daily brushing .It also
provides an ideal breeding ground for bacterias to grow because
of its rough surface. These bacteria that grows on tartar produce
toxins which causes infamation of gums. Inflamed gums is swollen
, spongy and bleeding. It also leads to destruction ,loosening and
downward shifting of the attachment of gums to tooth, and also leads
to bone loss and formation of pocket.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE PYORRHOEA
:
: bleeding from gums
: bad breath
: red swollen gums , with or without pain
: loose gums (as If lying in the tooth)
: mobility of tooth
: a constant feeling that something is stuck between your teeth
: dull, annoying pain
WHAT TO DO ?
Pyorrhoea, if treated can be controled but we must remember that
it is a disease which is cronic in nature and has a very high recurrence
rate. The treatement depend on how much the disease has progressed,
and can be any of the following:
1. Scaling, i.e professional removal of tartar.
2 Root planning and curatag - it is done in addition to scaling
to remove infected tissue and prevent further loss of supporting
structure.
3 .Gingivectomy and flap surgery are done to remove pockets from
gums ( so that a potential space for tarter formation and bacterial
growth, is eleminated).
4. Bone grafting- in case the loss of bone is substantial and the
tooth needs additional support.
PREVENTION
- The best and the single most important method is proper maintainance
of oral. hygine, with the help of proper brushing technique` and
proper flossing technique
- high fibre diet.
- rinshing your mouth after eating any thing.
