Course Description: This is an introductory course aimed at giving students a general knowledge of personal computers.  It includes fundamental concepts on the design and uses of computers, opportunities for hands-on experience, as well as discussion/demonstration of state-of-the-art technology.  No previous computer experience is necessary or assumed.  (3 credits)

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. use in writing and speaking the main vocabulary of computers.

2. demonstrate a general knowledge of computer hardware and how a computer works

3. explain the  basic elements of operating systems, in particular DOS and Windows.

4. demonstrate the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

5. explain the basic concepts of networking and telecommunications.

6. discuss the history of computers, some vision of their future, career possibilities, security and ethical issues involving computers and their use.


Evaluation and Grading:

Final grades will be determined by total points earned on all assignments, tests, quizzes, and five-minute writes with 90% being an A, 80% a B, 70% a C, and 60% a D. 


Attendance:    It is strongly recommended that regular attendance is maintained.  Excessive absences will reflect upon the student's quality of work, attitude toward the course, degree of classroom participation, and ultimately upon the final grade.
