Chapter Fourteen

The next morning after breakfast, my sisters and I stood on the front porch with the guys saying good-bye. We hugged each of them, saying our own special good-byes to each of them. When it came my turn to say good-bye to Kevin, we stood looking at each other for a long moment before moving into each other’s arms. I took the feelings into myself and stored them away for one of those long cold winter nights.

He moved away slightly and then pressed his lips to mine. No words were spoken both of us knowing there were none to be said. He pulled away and softly smiled at me before moving to their rented vehicle.

As they drove away, I stood there with my sisters on either side of me watching until I could no longer see their SUV.

“We’ve got another group of guests coming in at three today. That’ll be just enough time to get everything ready,” Carly said as she turned, opened the door and entered the house.

“Are you okay,” Callie asked me as she put an arm around my waist?

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I answered as I fought back a wave of tears. She squeezed gently and then together we headed inside to get ready for our next guests.

The next two months flew past as a steady stream of guests came and went. The Triple C guest ranch was doing a booming business and we were busy. Between running the guest ranch and keeping up with our livestock and the annual round up, not to mention our responsibilities to our respective careers, none of us had a chance to slow down.

So it really didn’t come as a shock when halfway through the day I would begin to feel run down. And it didn’t surprise me the first morning I woke up and ran for the bathroom, barely making it in time. But as a week passed and I was still getting sick in the morning and sometimes feeling nauseous in the late afternoons, I began to worry. Not because I suspected anything, but because I couldn’t afford to be sick. It wasn’t until I passed the calendar that hung in my bedroom that I began to realize what might be causing my illness.

I flipped back through the last two months and groaned aloud as I realized I hadn’t had a period in two and a half months.
I left my room and told Callie I was running into town, knowing full well, that I wasn’t going into town. If I did, the minute I checked out with what I was going into town for, half the area would know what I had bought and tongues would be wagging.

I drove into the next town over, bought a pregnancy test and rushed back home. I went immediately to my room and shut the door before reading the instructions on the back of the box.
It was one of those tests that you could take at anytime of the day and I sighed in relief. I needed to know if what I suspected was true or not.

While I waited for the test to finish, I paced the room, keeping my eye on the clock. As the minute hand moved a full five minutes, I crossed into the bathroom and picked up the test.

“Oh my God,” I gasped as I watched the pink cross grow darker in the window. “I’m pregnant.”
