Epilogue He closed the diary and laid it with the other volumes lying on the bed next to him. A soft smile played on his lips as memories of that long ago time ran through his mind. His Cassie; she had such a warm loving heart. His heart gave a little sigh and a tear escaped and ran down his weathered cheek. He had buried his Cassie earlier that morning and afterwards he had locked himself in his room to read those precious words of their early days together. She had a way of writing that made everything seem so fresh and new, as if it was happening right then, not forty years ago. “Dad?” Serena called from the other side of the door. “Dinner’s ready and everyone’s waiting for you.” Kevin swallowed hard to clear his throat and thought of his sons, daughters and grandchildren waiting for him downstairs. “I’ll be right down.” He listened closely for the sound of her retreating footsteps before picking up a picture of Cassie and him on their wedding day. The picture had been taken during the ceremony, just before they kissed. Her eyes were alight with love and centered on him. A silent tear slid slowly down the curve of his cheek and plopped onto his hand. “I love you Cassie,” He whispered as he lowered his lips to kiss her image. ***Author's Note: When I originally started this story, I didn't intend for it to end this way; but the more that I wrote, the more this ending screamed for attention. I tried my hardest to change it, but nothing else seemed to feel right. Finally, this ending just slapped at me and said "write me this way". So I did. I hope it touched you as much as it did me. ~ Dream*** CCC Index Main My Stories |
