Chapter Five The next morning, Heidi was up and dressed long before Nick. She sat at the table looking through the letters, examining every word. The letter's contained nothing overtly threatening, but the threat was implied. The stalker definitely knew a lot about Nick. She had also written down the phone conversations and so far nothing held a clue as to who was sending them or why. The postmarks on the envelopes were from different cities across America, leaving no clue as to where they were coming from. It was nothing but a game of wait and see. Whoever it was, had planned carefully, leaving no traceable clues. Not even fingerprints. The sounds of moving sheets drew her attention across the room and she found Nick wide-awake, sitting up in bed, watching her. "What were you hoping to find?" he asked. "A clue as to who your stalker is," she replied. "There's nothing there. If there was I would've said something a long time ago," he replied; his tone filled with disgust. "Don't worry Nick, we'll get him," she assured him. Nick didn't reply, instead he stood up and crossed to the bathroom. Heidi's breath caught in her throat. Nick in boxers, early in the morning, was a site to behold. She forced her eyes back to the papers in front of her. She looked over everything again, hoping she'd missed something. She growled in frustration and stacked the papers and put them away when she didn't find anything new. "You hungry?" Nick asked as he emerged from the bathroom fully dressed. "Yeah! Should we go down to the restaurant or call room service?" she asked. Nick shrugged his shoulders in indifference. He didn't really care one way or the other. He was just hungry. "Let's get out of the room for a while,” she suggested as she bent to slide on a pair of running shoes. "Fine by me," Nick answered without looking at her. Heidi sighed. "Look Nick, this isn't exactly a picnic for me either. For as long as we're together, let's just try and get along, okay?" Nick stared at her for a moment before answering, "Sure, whatever." As they stepped from the room Heidi placed her hand in his and smiled brightly. "What are you doing?" he growled. "Acting like a girlfriend," she replied, her voice just above a whisper, the squeeze she gave his hand told him not to screw this up. Nick surprised her then, by bending and placing a soft kiss to her forehead. Lord help her, if he didn't drive her crazy before the stalker was found, he'd surprise her to death! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ During breakfast, Heidi had to stifle the urge to pour her coffee in Nick's lap. He was taking his role of 'boyfriend' just a little to seriously. Brian and Kevin were seated on one side of the table and AJ and Howie were on the ends of the table, leaving her and Nick sitting on the other side. His hand rested on her knee, drawing tiny, maddening circles around it. He leaned in repeatedly to nuzzle her cheek or throat, and he whispered in her ear how much he hated the idea of her being his girlfriend. To everyone else in the restaurant though, it looked like they were 'in love.' Feeling his hand ride higher on her leg, Heidi innocently reached her hand under the tablecloth and pinched his thigh. Nick stifled a yelp and shot a hot pointed look her way. Heidi sweetly smiled at him and blew him a kiss. "Man if we gotta watch you two act like this all the time, this is the last time I'm eating with you," Brian teased. The comment flew over Heidi's and Nick's heads, they were in the middle of 'flirting' with each other. "That's it, I'm going back to my room," AJ announced. "I think I'll go with you," Howie said. "Wait for us," Kevin said as he and Brian stood and followed after their friends, leaving Nick and Heidi alone. "Now see what you did?" Nick accused. "What I did. What about you?" Heidi hissed, before looking around the dinning room and noticing that they were drawing quite a bit of unwanted attention. "Maybe we should finish this discussion upstairs,” she said as she scooted her chair back and stood waiting for him to do the same. When he was on his feet, her hand reached for his and like a loving couple he smiled at her and led her from the room. Their false sweetness dropped the minute they were in their room. "You're going to screw this up Nick. I know what you're trying to do and I won't let you," Heidi said as she swung around to face him. "And just what is it that I'm trying to do Hei?" Heidi grimaced at the new irritating nickname and said, "You're trying to make things as unbearable as you can, in hopes I'll quit. I won't quit Nicky,” she said, throwing in her own nickname for him. "You may not care about that stalker and what he can do to you, but I do and I'll be damned if he gets to you," she finished hotly. "My name is Nick,” he said between clenched teeth. "And my name is Heidi; not Hei or Dee or whatever else you come up with," she said, her own teeth clenched and her anger clearly showing in her eyes. "Fine! You're Heidi and I'm Nick. But I still don't like it," he stated, making sure she hadn't forgot. As if that was possible. Every other word out of his mouth was how much he hated being forced into this situation. How much he hated having her around. Heidi knew not to take it personally, he was scared, and with good reason. Some psycho stalker was out there somewhere, taunting him, waiting for the right time to... To do what? If they could figure out why the stalker had targeted Nick, they'd have a better chance at protecting him. Unfortunately there weren't any clues. "I know you don't like it Nick. None of us do, but until we catch him, you're going to have to cooperate with me. I promise, as soon as we've caught him, I'll be out of your life." Saving Nick Carter Chapter Six Main Page |
