RiverKeepers Dedication Ceremony May 6, 2002

Today I drove up to Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky to watch the dedication of the Kentucky RiverKeeper and the new Kentucky River Museum.
There were lots of people there, including Kevin and Kristin, Robert Kennedy Jr. Jim and Vicki Hanna and many others who are involved with RiverKeeper.
Kevin repeated how proud he was to be a native of Kentucky and how close to his heart JWR, the enviroment and Kentucky are.
After lengthy speeches, Kevin, Robert and Joanne Glasser, president of EKU  christened the boat. It was hilarious! Before the first try Kevin said that he hoped they didn't dent the boat! On the first swing, the bottle didn't break, but the railing of the pontoon bent!LOL They swung the bottle again and really bent the railing that time! You should've seen Kevin's face. I felt so sorry for him. You could tell he was sorry about bending the railing.
Then they moved down to the trailer hitch and broke the bottle there. The crowd cheered and then Kevin stepped up and pulled the railing back into place.
YUM! I got to see his muscles in motion!
There was a lot of press coverage on the dedication and they did a quick press conference. By this point I was out of film, so I stayed to the background and watched as others got their pics taken with Kevin.
There was a little boy, around 8 or 9 years old, who wanted Kristin's autograph. He was so shy he wouldn't ask, so I told him I would. Kristin was very nice and signed his book.
Today, there were no close personal encounters with Kevin, but that really wasn't why I was there. Through JWR & theRiverKeeper I've come to realize that the world we live in isn't safe anymore. It's not always going to be the way it is today if we don't wake up and start protecting it. I have to agree with Kevin, I want my children to be able to swim in the river, to play on its banks and not have to worry about what may be floating in it. I want them to be able to fish out of our rivers and if they choose, be able to eat the fish they catch. None of that is possible right now because of the pollution in the river.
