Epilogue

With Duncan dead, Morris and Hollister sang like cannaries. They gave names, dates and places, complete documentation of everything they had taken part in, in hopes of a lighter sentence. They also gave up the name of the man who had murdered Mattie, Officer Kenwood and who had attempted to murder Kevin.
Kevin was brought in to pick the man out of a line up and he identified the man correctly. The man's name was Dalton Slade. With the evidence given to them by Morris and Hollister and with the ID made by Kevin the DA presented the case for trial.
Slade stood trial for the murders of Mattie and Officer Kenwood and the attempted murder of Kevin.
Kevin sat next to Liz and Julie as they awaited the verdict to be read. Liz tensed as the jury filed back in and took their seats. This is what they had waited a year for.
"Madame forperson, have you reached a verdict?" the judge asked.
  "We have your honor."
  "Please read the verdict."
"On the charge of murder of Detective Mattie Doyle, we find the defendant guilty. On the charge of murder of Officer Paul Kenwood, we find the defendant guilty. On the charge of attempted murder of Kevin Richardson, we find the defendant guilty" the forperson announced.
"So say you one, so say you all?" the judge inquiered.
  "Yes your honor."
"Does the defense wish to say anything?" the judge asked as he turned to face the defense and his counsel.
"Yes your honor, We request sentencing today" Slade's defense attorney said.
"Very well. Dalton Slade, your callousness and total disregard for human life is an abomination. I hearby sentence you to two consecutive life sentences."
Liz sobbed openly as the sentence was delivered. Kevin wrapped his arm around his fiancee and kissed the top of her head. Nothing could ever bring Mattie or Paul back, but justice had been served.
