I was at the Orange County Fair. The Grandstand Arena had been walled up and had a new roof over it. It looked really cool. It was all covered in maroon velvet, and there were little gold decorations here and there.
I looked around for a seat, but I couldn’t find one. Shrugging, I hopped up on the stage and checked out the situation up there. There was a double line of curtains running across the stage. The first one was right behind Ruben and Bermuda’s instruments, which were shoved up the stage farther so that Jim and Steve would be sandwiched between them and Al. The second one was a few feet behind that one.
I hid in the gap between the curtains near Steve’s bass. I peered through a gap conveniently located right in front of me. Al and the guys walked out on the stage and got ready. They started playing. I was having a blast behind that curtain, watching the backs of their heads.
During One More Minute, Mongo handed Al a huge bowl of rocks instead of a scarf. Al shrugged and started passing out rocks to the crowd. I was cracking up laughing behind that curtain. Al had the most hilarious look on his face. He’d toss rocks to people, he’d slip them in their pockets, he’d balance them on their heads…it was hysterical!
I must have laughed a bit too loud, because Steve heard me. He stuck his head back with me and asked “What are you doing back there?”
“Well…there aren’t any more seats, and I wanted to see!” He nodded and stuck his head back out, gesturing for me to do the same. I poked my head out just as Al got back up on the stage. He grinned at me and tossed me a rock. I caught it and stuffed it in my pocket, grinning like a fool.
