I was at an indoor OCFair concert with Ambri. We were at a table waaaay off to the side of the auditorium. I dug around in my purse for my camera…oh no. “Ambri, I forgot my camera!”
“Here, take one of mine,” and she tossed me a disposable camera. Yay!
The back curtain twitched open for a second, and we could see a stagehand, all in black, trying to get Al to get up and get ready for the show. Al, who was sitting inside a grocery cart with his legs dangling over the front, was sitting very calmly and letting the stagehand harangue him. The curtain twitched back shut.
It was time for the preshow. The lights dimmed, and out on the stage walked Bermuda. He did some excellent standup comedy, bowed, and walked off.
The lights dimmed and went up again. There was Jim. Jim played us a few selections from his album “Coconut Hat”, bowed, and walked off. The lights dimmed.
The lights went back up. There was Steve. Steve played Big Shoes for the increasingly restive crowd, bowed, and walked off. The lights dimmed.
The lights went back up. There stood Rubén with a guitar. He started to rip into a very complex guitar solo. Halfway through it, all the microphones cut out. Rubén noticed a few notes later, growled to himself and stormed off the stage. The lights dimmed.
The lights didn’t go back up, but we could see faint outlines of Al and the band as they took their places. New age music started oozing its way out of the speakers, and the screen started lighting up with quotes.
‘“Take five selves and three Al’s”-Rubén’ was one of these quotes. A Yahoo internet browser was displayed right below the quotes, and repeated them all with some rather interesting misspellings.
‘Can you tell me how to get to 2727272727th Street?’
‘Who is the founder of this Yahoo Group anyway?’
Finally, the new age stuff stopped, and the lights came up on Al and Bermuda. Bermuda was up near Al’s microphone, setting up a gong. Al remarked “This song was released way faster than any of our other ones…” Just then three black people came on the stage with African drums. Bermuda nodded, picked up the gong’s mallet, and beat the gong as the three new people started drumming. Then I woke up.
