Readings: Genesis 27:1-19; Hebrews 12:22-23 THE BLESSING We ache for acceptance. Our desire for a blessing is so deep that we will do anything to get it. Our reading gives us a frightening picture of how most of us try. We dress up to look and act like someone we are not. Jacob got hairy like Esau. His clothes didn't fit. His voice didn't sound right. Jacob longed for his father's blessing, and the only way he knew to get it was to dress up like someone else. We do that too. We try to get what we want by not letting people see who we really are. Some of us dress for status, hoping that the world will bless us. We dress up because we want approval and acceptance. We act like Jacob did. Jacob grabs for a blessing because he wants the blessings of the firstborn. We do too. We want to feel uniquely valuable. We want the people we value most to tell us, "You are special." Television talk shows and self-help books tell us, "You don't get your self-worth from anyone else, it should come from yourself." But that's not true! We need other people's blessings. When we accepted salvation in Jesus Christ, we got the firstborn blessing we are looking for. How can a family have many chidren that are all firstborn? God the Father tells us that through the cross he offers the love that makes us one with His firstborn: JESUS CHRIST. My Prayer: "Lord Jesus, thank you for clothing yourself with the curse we deserve. Thank you for giving your firstborn blessing to us. Help us to live as your firstborn' favorites..."
