Welcome guys! The most important
part in a graduate student's travel to his destination of pursuing an MS degree
is to write the GRE exam. Unfortunately I have been experienced only to the old
version of exam i.e. the one with analytical and for 2400. Now the pattern has changed. Therefore, what ever I write is only to the old pattern, which
will last till September 2002.
Brief Idea:
this pattern contains of three sections…. 1.analytical, 2.quantitative
& 3.verbal.
Quantitative: this is
the part where every person (all the people with a MATHS in their study
curriculum) can just relax. A very minimal preparation can fetch high scores.
The reason behind that is that it contains of very simple problems, designed
only to test your mind for subtlety. Its always the
time that is under account when somebody is doing their quantitative section.
So, be sharp and accurate. Better get acquainted with all the formulae and get
to know how to attempt data representation questions. This you can do one-way.
Just an example: take your dad's income and plan a pie graph for the amount he
spends on your family. Or else make a bar graph of your career record.
Calculate how by what percentages your academics differed each year. That is it
this is the way.
Analytical:
dear friends let me tell you this is the most interesting part of the
exam. This really tests you in all ways. It judges how optimistic you are, how
subtle reasoning you have, how efficient are you in day-to-day life. This
consists of two types of questions. (a). Logic games
& puzzles. (b) Logical reasoning.
Logical
games are really games, which only require your keen concentration and
practice.
Logical
reasoning is one that really tests you… and I promise you will get perfect when
you will be able to analyze your wrong and right answers. That is it. Get on with
it.
Verbal: this is
the toughest part for many of the Indians. Many people think that acquaintance
with the 3500 words that are present in the Barron's would help them. However,
this is the biggest misconception. Let me tell you it is the amount of applicability
you have for those words is the criteria. So try to put all those words in
usage. That would be better. Regularly read THE HINDU. That is a very good newspaper,
which covers all the words you read in your Barron's. Also, try to make your
own sentences with all those words. Try to get synonymous words rather trying
to get the meaning of every word. Also, watch the CNN.
IN A
NUTSHELL
F
Get touch with all the formulae.
F
Get to know the internal meaning of the question.
F
Look for modifiers (however, but, also, instead) when
you answer you logical reasoning.
F
Practice as much as possible. This is the key for
success.
F
Watch CNN.
F
Get to the BIG BOOK and complete all the exercises.
(At least twice if you are looking for a score above than 2200)
F
Do not think that GRE is a very tough or big exam.
F
VERY IMPORTANT: REMEMBER IN GRE YOU WILL
NOT SEE EVEN A SINGLE QUESTION WRONG OR ABSURD. IF YOU HAVE FOUND ONE, THEN YOU
ARE IN BIG FIX. THE PEOPLE IN THE ETS ARE VERY MUCH TRAINED
AND THEY NEVER COMMIT MISTAKES.
F
For those who are writing after September 2002, do
follow the instructions under the verbal and quantitative categories.
