USA Today: Pondering George Mason's future (5/18/06)
Recruiting
FAIRFAX, Va. — Whither Cinderella after the ball? In the fairy tale, she lives happily ever after.  At George Mason University, it's wait and see.  The madness of March has given way to mid-May, but Final Four glory still simmers on a front burner here. When the Class of 2006 settles into their seats at Patriot Center for Saturday's commencement, GMU president Alan G. Merten plans to tell graduates they have lived through the most exciting year in school history.  "By the way," he will say, according to a draft of his speech, "let me quash the rumor right now that this year, instead of giving out diplomas, we are planning to give each graduate a basketball."  Mason officials say nothing will change in the way they approach men's basketball. Athletics director Tom O'Connor assembled his staff to make that point: "We got where we are because of who we are. We don't want to be anything different."  Read More.

Montez Downey, a 6-6 guard who graduated from Bishop McGuinness in 2005, has committed to play at UNC Wilmington, his former high-school coach said.  Stan Kowalewski, who coached Downey at McGuinness and now coaches at High Point Central, said that Downey recently visited UNCW and gave a commitment Tuesday night. Downey didn't attend school in the fall semester but spent the spring semester at Miami Dade Junior College, where he practiced with but didn't play for the basketball team.  Downey, the brother of Taron Downey, a former guard at Wake Forest, averaged 23 points, four rebounds and 3.2 assists in his senior season at McGuinness.  Read More.
Chron.com: William & Mary Makes NCAA Imagery List (5/17/06)
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The NCAA has added William & Mary to its list of schools subject to restrictions on the use of Indian mascots, names and imagery in the governing body's championship events.  William & Mary will be allowed to keep its "Tribe" nickname, but can't use it in NCAA championship competitions and also is barred from holding NCAA events.  The school had submitted a review, in which it argued that the Tribe nickname was consistent with the NCAA's policy of nondiscrimination. It claimed the nickname "is designed to communicate ennobling sentiments of commitment, shared idealism, community and common cause," that it appropriately highlights the school's founding mission to educate indigenous peoples and that regional tribal leaders had indicated they do not consider the school's nickname hostile or abusive.  Read More.
The Birmingham News: UAB to play at ODU and at VCU (5/16/06)
UAB men's basketball coach Mike Davis is close to delivering on his promise to play a tougher non-conference schedule.  UAB will play defending national champion Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic on Dec. 30. Davis said he's also working on securing a game against traditional power Connecticut and trying to arrange a home-and-home matchup with Wyoming. An early season exempt tournament is another possibility. Davis said his team was already facing a difficult schedule, with the Blazers playing
road games at VCU, Old Dominion, Cincinnati and Western Kentucky, plus home games against Minnesota, DePaul and South Florida. "We won't have to worry about RPI," Davis said.  Read More.
