Thanksgiving has always
been a time of happy celebration at our house ever since
I can remember. As a child I recall that everybody was
home together, relaxing enjoying the day and the smells.
That in itself was special, for our family was on the go
all the time. Turkey was almost always the main course,
and Mother's famous potato salad. Somehow she never made
it seem like work, though from experience, I know how
much work it really was. I think my Mom was who really
made the holiday special. She always seemed to be one of
those perfect hostesses that you see in the movies from
the 50's--not a hair out of place and perfect makeup. She
even used to wear those little frilly aprons! And the
food! Well, I still can remember the taste of it all--I
think that her pumpkin pie was my favorite.
Now, I do the cooking most Thanksgivings. Sometimes Mom
will still make some of her great potato salad, but for
the most part, she has given up baking and making big
meals. I don't blame her, though I miss it all sometimes.
Big meals are the normal order of the day at my house,
since I have a big family, so when the holidays roll
around, the table fairly groans under the weight. It is
not as much fun being the hostess as she always made it
appear to be, but the satisfaction of seeing the
happiness around me more than makes up for the work.
My wish for you and yours is that you have a very happy
and blessed Thanksgiving!
