Drinkolympics Newsletter #1                                         24th October 2002

Welcome to the first issue of the official Drinkolympics newsletter. However it is with a great deal of sadness, that I must begin, as we here at Drinkolympics mourn the passing of one of the official Drinkolympics shot glasses. Last week the infamous, Red Ringed Glass, was tragically broken in a reckless washing incident. Although it is early stages in our investigation, all reports show that charges against the accussed will be laid, and they will be sumound infront of the Drinkolympics Judicary. The accussed has been granted name surpression, to prevent Anna from being harrassed.

Irene has kindly offered to share with us, some words to remember the glass she often, passionatly refered to as Red Ringer.

Red Ringer (06.07.02 - 15.10.02)

Personally Red Ringer was my personal favourite. I really enjoyed its nice, wide, open top. There was no hiding what was beneath. But what the top couldn't hide, was the nice rounded curves of the glass. Red Ringer was easily our largest and most challenging glass.
Steve summed it up best one night when he described it to me as, "two good jugs". I'll miss that glass, but I'm sure the glass has gone to a better place.
(as we went to print we had confirmed, that the glass had infact ended up at Churton Park landfill)

Drinkolympics News

18.10.02          Records Tumble
The night began with most competitors attempting the 50km walk, and there was controversy as several walked away promising to be the first 'Spity'. However no one was, and several very impressive scores were posted. Both Anton the burly South African, and Matt fell just one shy of the previous mark (31), while the Big Fijian Chris went that extra step, setting a new world record of 33 shots in one minute.
In the Long Jump both Matt and
Dan went under the previous record, posting times of 9.54 and 9.63 seconds respectively, and again both went under the previous record in the 100 Yard Dash. Matt was first to break the record posting a time of 2.52 seconds, only to have that smashed by Dan just over a minute later, setting a new world record, 2.45 seconds.
Mention must also be made to
Cristin who completed the initiation in world record time, 2 minutes and 24 seconds, and Bex Reid who broke the 1 minute barrier in the Long Jump taking over 2 minutes of her previous personal best.

18.10.02          Chris's Tumble
In a bizarre coincidence and in true Craig Barrett 50km walk fashion, our very own 50km Walk champion, Chris Cornwall, paid respect to Craig in the only way possible. As Chris left, he misjudged the steps through no fault of his own and found himself at the bottom quicker than anticipated. When we spoke to Chris after the event, all be it completely incoherent, we believe he was trying to say it was his way as Drinkolympics 50km Walk Champion, as saluting Craig Barretts infamous performance in the same event, during the 1998 Koala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. Chris is now recovering at Wellington Hospital, and as of yesterday he was in a stable condition.
