That morning Ruth was ordered to not leave the house at all. Her family was too scared for her safety and were thinking that Specs might not be there next time if there is a next time. As Ruth was done with her chores she pouted at her window sill, gazing out of the streets. It was a beautiful sunny day in New York. She absolutely hated being stuck in her house for who knows how long. Aside from the beautiful day she was thinking about Specs. She couldn't help but wonder what he was doing that moment. "Her name is Ruth." Specs said. "She's a gorgeous red head with the beauty you'd never imagine and extremely soft skin." Mush said, "Sounds like my kinda woman!" Then Crutchy came, "So what did you do with her?" Specs smiled to himself and said, "I kissed her!" At that moment all the Newsies were cheering for him. Jack interrupted, "So when are we gonna meet this Ruth?" Specs said, "I want to see her tonight. Maybe if I invite her to come to our lodge?" Jack said, "No no no. Just meet us at the restaurant where we's sometimes eat." He said, "Great! I'll bring her there!" When Specs went to sell papes, he was surprised he didn't see Ruth at all. He thought, "Oh well, I'll just see her tonight." He was out there all day, trying to think of why he didn't see Ruth. His heart was pounding just thinking about her. When he finally selled all his papes he ran to her home, despite how sweaty and dirty he was. He ran to her home to see Ruth by the window sill again, gazing at the stars. He looked up and yelled, "Ruth!" She looked down and had a big smile on her face. He said, "How's your face?" She touched it and said, "It's a bit sore, but I'm better." He said, "Great! Come with me somewhere!" She then frowned and said, "I can't!" He ran up because he thought he heard her wrong. He said, "You can't?" She replied, "My family is too scared for me. That's all. They're afraid that there will be a next time." He held her hands gently and said, "Want me to talk to them?" She shook her head and said, "They still wouldn't let me. I know it." He said, "Well, what can we do?" She answered, "I don't know." A few moments later she looked at him and grinned. She then ran across her room and locked the door. He asked, "What are you doing?" She then climbed out the window with his help. She asked, "So, where do you wanna go?" Back at the restaurant almost all Newsies were waiting for Specs to come with Ruth. Spot just so happened to be there. He said, "So when's the guy coming with Ruth!?" Suddenly the door opened and they saw Specs come in, with no one though. Everyone was angered. They said, "Where's the lovely dame!?" then Mush said, "You betta not be lyin to us Specs!" Then Ruth came in casually. Everyone took off their hats and said, "Well hello madam!" She smiled at them and walked casually to the bar. Everyone was whispering to each other, "Which one of us should go talk to her?" But before Racetrack would answer Specs was already over there. Mush said, "Wow, look at that long red hair." Then Racetrack said, "And that poirfect body. I think I'm in love!" Then Jack looked at the side of her face where she was bandaged up. He laughed to himself when Specs put his arm around her and talked to her. Jack said, "Awright Specs! We get it now! Introduce us to this lovely woman named Ruth!" Specs and Ruth laughed when they realized they've been out-smarted. The Newsies didn't feel the same though. They were pretending that they already knew about it and saying, "Oh I knew that was Ruth!" and "You didn't fool me for a second!" Specs brought her over to the other Newsies. Each was staring at her beauty. Some went as far as being jealous of Specs of finding her first. But Specs didn't find her. It was just a mere damsel in distress incident. But what they loved was that Ruth was a great woman, just like Medda. They started trusting her and admiring her. Asking her questions about her life and her telling them jokes and stories. They were there all night practically. Each story she told though Specs grew to love her even more than he did before. It was a different feeling for him. Him recently breaking up with a woman by the name of Elizabeth. He didn't think that he'd ever get over Elizabeth, but now he trusted that he could. And it was only the second day of meeting Ruth! Ruth enjoyed the stories of the Newsies. How Jack escaped refuge on Teddy Roosevelt's carriage, how Mush got his nick name. But what she loved most was hearing stories of Specs, even if they were embarrassing. She loved hearing every minute of it, and eventually grew to love him more and more. Her eyes amazed him and his smile made her smile back. But one question brought concern in Ruth's eyes. Racetrack asked, "So Ruth, who was the man who attacked you yestahday?" Ruth's smile disappeared and her eyes turned cold. She coughed and said, "No one. Just no one." Specs was concerned about her. She looked at one of the Newsie's pocket watches and said, "Oh my! I bet my family is worried about me!" Specs said, "Let me walk ya home. Okay?" She smiled and said, "Thank you." It was cold out that night. Specs put his jacket over her shoulders so that she would keep warm. When they walked in, her sister was in the living room. Victoria said, "Somebody's in trouble..." Ruth said, "What do you mean?" Suddenly her father came and yelled, "Where the hell were you!? Didn't you hear me when I said that you were NOT to go outside at all!?" She nodded slowly. He smacked her and she fell on the floor. He then said, "And you! Specs! How do we know that we can trust you with our daughter!?" Specs was shocked. Just a day ago the man offered Specs to sleep in his house and he was being treated not like a newsie, but like a nobleman. And now this. Her father said, "Get out you street rat!" Ruth was crying on the floor. Specs looked at her in despair. Ruth said, "Just go Specs, please." Specs walked out. While he walked out the father said, "And don't come near my daughter again! Ya hear!?" Specs ran out and went to hide near the house. . He then looked at the window where she was. He heard a loud smack and Ruth crying. When he knew things were safe he ran up the fire-escape stairs to her window. He looked in and saw an even more bloody Ruth crying. He tapped on the glass lightly. She looked at him. She then waved her hand away so he would go away. But he didn't. He climbed in and held her sofltly, with her blood and tears staining his shirt. He then started singing sofly... Baby mine, don't you cry. Baby mine, dry your eyes Rest your head close to my heart. Never to part, baby of mine Lovely one when you play. Don't you mind what you say Let those eyes sparkle and shine. Never a tear, baby of mine If they knew sweet lovely you. They'd end up loving you too All those same people who scold you. What they'd give just for The right to hold you From your head to your toes. You're so sweet, goodness knows But you're so precious to me. Beautiful as can be, baby of mine. She looked up at him and clinged onto his suspenders. He said, "Why didn't you tell me this happens to you?" She said, "I didn't know this would happen again." She looked at the shirt and saw blood stains on it. She said, "I'm so sorry!" He then brushed her hair with his fingers and said, "No no, it's okay." He then looked down at her and said, "Ruth, run away with me." She said, "I've only known you for not even two days!" He said, "You don't deserve this life Ruth. Come with me to the Newsies lodge house." She said, "I don't know." He said, "Please. Just think. If you stay here, you'll be beaten more and you'll probably rarely see me." She said, "I don't want that Specs. I lo---...I mean." He knew what she was going to say. He smiled and said, "Gather your stuff. We're going tonight." She let go. He wiped her tears away with his thumbs. She then grabbed her blanket and spread it out. She put some of her clothes in and he helped her with it. When she was done wrapping she took a string and tied it at the top. She said, "Let's go, please." He smiled at her. She said, "What are you smiling at?" He said, "You're so beautiful. You know that?" She blushed. He said, "I know a man who can help you with your marks. Let's go." He helped her through the window. He then walked out. She was carrying the bag. He said, "No no, let me help you with the bag. Then they slowly crept under the windows, down the stairs, and to the Newsies lodging house. |
