Ruth woke up in Spec's bed. She was so cold, but felt so hot to others. She was shivering. She looked to her left to see a doctor and Mr. Kloppman. The doctor was talking to Mr. Kloppman quietly. She turned to her right to see Specs holding her hand, silently crying. She said, "Specs?" He smiled and said, "Good morning sweetheart." She said, "What's wrong? What happened to me?" He fell silent. The doctor leaned down and asked, "How are you feeling Ruth?" She said, "I'm freezing and I'm in pain." He smiled and said, "It's surprising you survived this." She looked at him and said, "What? I was dying?" He nodded slowly and said, "Ruth, I have upsetting news to tell you." She looked at Specs. She said, "Before you tell me, is anyone else here besides you three?" Specs shook his head. She said, "Do you know Specs?" He nodded slowly. She breathed and said, "Okay...tell me doc." The doctor said, "Let me ask you this. While you were kidnapped were you eating at all or drinking?" She shook her head and said, "Only water..but that was rare." He said, "Were you beaten severely or did you fall down anywhere?" She said, "Only on my head.....oh...and I did fall down the stairs when I was trying to get out." The doctor fell silent and said, "Yep, that can do it for a pregnant woman." Ruth sat up, even though she was in pain. She said, "What do you MEAN 'pregnant woman!?'" The doctor fell silent again. She turned to Specs and said, "What does he mean?" Specs said, "Ruth....you lost your baby." She said, "........how could I lose it? You mean I had a miscarriage?" Specs nodded. She said, "And it was OUR baby?" He said, "Yes it was." She sat there silent. She then started crying holding her face and trying to calm down.
A few days later Specs was talking to Jack outside. Jack said, "Is she doing any better?" He shook his head and said, "She took it way to seriously. Damnit Jack...she's 17! And I'm 19! She shouldn't have this happen to her when she's this young!" He then punched a wall. Jack grabbed his friend's shoulder and rubbed it a bit. He said, "Look...I know it's hard to lose a baby. Especially if it's yours." Specs said, "I care about the baby too...but I'm just worried about Ruth!" Jack said, "Look..Specs..I learned that bad things happen for a good reason. You may not see the reason today or tomorrow. But you'll see why in the future." He then started walking away. Specs said, "Thanks Jack." He smiled and said, "No problem Johnny." he then winked at him and ran off.
Specs started walking around the neighborhood. He was upset about what happened to Ruth. He walked past her old home and looked at it for a few minutes. He then looked ahead and went to the place on where he first met Ruth. He was thining of the past with her. He truly did love her, and he hated himself for making her be the way she is now. Lonely, depressed, and crying. He then saw a woman walking around in the park. She was in her thirties probably, carrying something. He smiled to himself and said, "Now I know what might cheer Ruth up. I just hope it works!"
When he got back to the lodge house he knocked on the door to the room. He said, "Ruth?" She said, "What?" He said, "I have a surprise for you!" She said, "I don't want surprises right now." He said, "Come on...please???" She sighed and said, "All right." He said, "Great! Close your eyes first!" She said, "Damnit Specs no!" He said, "Come on, trust me!" She said, "All right...my eyes are closed." He walked in quietly holding the surprise. He saw her eyes were shut tight. He said, "Now...hold out your arms!" She sighed and held out her arms. He then put the surprise in her arms. It started crying softly.
He said, "All right..open them now!" She opened them and gasped. She said, "Specs...wha? Who's baby is this?" The woman Specs saw earliar walked in. She said, "What is this for?" He said, "Look, I know we lost our baby...and I was hoping that maybe holding this baby will help you imagine holding our own baby one last time before he leaves us." She smiled and said, "He?" Specs replied, "Well, I was thinking it would be a boy." She smiled and said, "So did I." She then started rocking the baby quietly. Smiling for the first time in a few days. She asked the woman, "What's his name?" She smiled and said, "Johnathan Thomas." She smiled at Specs, knowing that his name was Johnny. She said, "I appreciate this madam." She said, "No problem. I'm very sorry for your loss." Ruth smiled and said, "Thank you."
Ruth held the baby for a few more minutes. She then gave Johnathan back to the woman. She thanked her again before she left and hugged her softly. Specs was sitting on the bed when Ruth went to lay down again. Ruth sat next to him and hugged him tightly. She then kissed his cheek and said, "That was really sweet of you Specs. Why'd you do that?" He said, "You were upset. And I was hoping it'd work, and it did! Plus I love you too much to see you this hurt." He kissed her softly. She said, "Can we do one last thing before I say good-bye to our son?" He smiled and said, "Of course."
A few days later the Newsies, Kloppman, Specs, and Ruth were in a graveyard. A priest was there and said, "We gather here today to witness the death of a baby not even born yet. A baby named either Jonathan Mitchell or Rachel Nicole." Specs held her and was comforting her while she was crying. The newsies and Kloppman gathered their money together and bought a tomb stone for the baby Specs and Ruth lost. It was neatly placed saying, "In Memory of Jonathan Mitchell or Rachel Nicole. Carry the Banner In Heaven." When the priest was done, Ruth put a single red rose in front of the tomb stone standing up.
When Specs and Ruth walked back to the lodge house. Specs smiled to the Newsies so that he would be alone with Ruth. When they went onto the bed he said, "I have another surprise for you." She smiled and said, "What is it?" He said, "Well if I told you it wouldn't be a surprise now would it?" He then laughed and walked to the back of the room. He got something out that was shiny. He said, "Good thing the Newsies didn't pawn it off." she looked at it and said, "What is that?" He then walked to her singing...

He then held out her hand and said, "Ruth, after all we've been through. We're still together. And it'd give me great honor if you became my wife." She was speechless, no...shocked! It was a white gold ring with a rich sapphire on it. She said, "Is it real?" He nodded and said, "It's a family heirloom. From my mother before she died." She held out her left hand, shaking. She said, "Yes...of course!" He held it softly and put the ring on. Coincidentally it was the perfect fit! She admired it and looked at Specs. She said, "Are we really engaged?" He smiled and said, "Of course we are!" She then hugged him tightly and kissed him. He kissed back passionetly. He said, "Let's go tell the others!"
