THE RACCOON

These beautiful bandits are fasinating animals. Did you know they are a distant relative to the bear? I have had occasion to watch the new babies, and they indeed look very similar to a bear cub, minus the mask, of course.

Ted Andrews writes in his book, "Animal Speak", that it is believed the name Raccoon comes from the Algonquinn Indian word "arckunem" meaning hand scratcher. Their paws are very sensitive and they are very apt at "getting into things", opening lids, doorknobs, latches, etc. This won them the reputation of "thieves". But really they are just of a curious nature, loving to explore. The love of adventure, and curiosity coupled together, make for an exciting totem.

Raccoon's are fasinated by water. They like to slosh their food in it as well as their hands. This started the belief that they always wash their food before eating it. When the fact of it is, the water increases the sensitivity of their hands, making them able to "feel" their food easier. It registers the "feel" of the object in their mind, and the next time they recognize it easier. Remember these are nocturnial animals, and they "see" with their hands.

Raccoon's hold the knowledge of transformation through masks and disquise. Actually mask making is an ancient art for use in ceremonies, celebrations, even in magical practices. If we are wearing a mask, we can be whatever we want to be. Are you hiding your "true" self? The raccoon holds the secret to aiding in uncovering your true self.

In the wild they are deceptive and agile, courageous and quie ferocious if need be, protecting their young especially. They are experts in self defense. They are very sociable, and enjoy each other's company.
