Woodridge High loses quiet leader  Memorial garden planned at stadium for teacher
By Marilyn Miller, Akron Beacon Journal staff writer

Forrest A. Merriam was a quiet leader. And his idea of having a good time was to do something for someone else.  Mr. Merriam, 62, had planned to retire from Woodridge High School in the next five weeks and wrap up a 31-year teaching career.  But he died Sunday of a heart attack.  His family said Mr. Merriam had been fighting cancer, undergoing chemotherapy for the past six weeks, and was working out at the time of his death.  The high-energy math teacher and former athletic director at Woodridge High attended every sporting event, play and concert to support his students.  He was also the golf coach and a former assistant football and track coach.  For the past five years, he ran the vocational program, finding jobs for students and teaching them how to get jobs.  Seniors at the school plan to start a memorial garden for Mr. Merriam at the football stadium.

Mr. Merriam was born in Painesville, where he met his future wife in junior high school. "We just knew from the beginning we would marry.  It was a done deal,'' said Frances, his wife of 41 years. "We married the weekend after I finished my student teaching."

The couple have two children, two grandchildren and two more grandchildren on the way.  Mr. Merriam also taught and coached in Maple Heights and Painesville, then left teaching for 10 years to run a sporting goods business.  "He came back to teaching because he missed being with the kids.  He was so into the kids,'' said his wife. "When he went back to teaching, he said, `I may not make a lot of money, but I'm doing what I love.'  He enjoyed it even more the second time around.'  'He picked up a nickname in college.  When he was introduced as Forrest, his football teammates at Ohio Northern University took one look at him and renamed him Woody.  The name stuck.  He was a linebacker and still holds Ohio Northern's varsity record for the most tackles.  Family and friends said he wouldn't want anyone to make a fuss over him, even in death.  "You followed him because you admired him,'' his wife said.  "He never stood up and said he was your leader, you just knew it.  "He was selfless, always taking pleasure in everyone's else's success.

Co-worker Cindy Dilley of Kent said:  "He was Woody from Woodridge... he played such an important role here at the school. He was a caring person, someone the kids and the teachers could depend on and always seemed to say just the right thing.''

Phil Hatton, Woodridge High's principal, said Mr. Merriam was the first person he met when he came to the school five years ago.  "He was a steady guy, very dependable. He never missed school, he was a hard worker, conscientious and very diplomatic -- he did his best to please everyone,'' Hatton said.  "He was a quiet, gentle man, very patient with his students, with a great sense of humor.''

Dilley said Mr. Merriam was proud at Woodridge teacher meetings to sit next to his daughter, who also taught in the district but in a different building.  "He was considerate of people and always there to help if something wasn't going right in your life,'' Dilley said.  "In all my 24 years at Woodridge, we have never had a faculty member die.  If he were here, he would be the one helping us through this.''
