DRYING TECHNOLOGY JOURNAL: FAQs
What types of articles are considered by the journal for possible publication?

Over the past several years we consider only comprehensive research papers of archival interest. The category of Technical Notes is phased out. Only in exceptional cases the Editor may accept a few papers in this category. The large manuscript flow coupled with limited space per volume has made this a necessity. Thus, papers that provide empirical fits to data on kinetics or equilibrium moisture content, etc., will not be considered for publication.

How long does it take to get my paper published in DRT?

Depends on manuscript flow, which has been rising steeply in recent years. It also depends on the time taken by referees as well as the quality of the paper. If the paper is technically acceptable but does not meet the standard of language required for publication or if it does not meet the format requirements rigorously, authors can accept delays even if their paper is accepted formally. It typically takes 9-15 months to get the paper in print from the date of submission.

What are the common causes of delay, major revision or rejection of manuscripts submitted to DRT?

Of course, quality is the key factor which the referees look for. Authors are required to show familiarity with prior work but with carefully chosen references citations. Often we find authors are either unaware of highly relevant work already published in DRT or IDS proceedings, or choose not to cite it. Referees are asked to look through the REFERENCES list carefully to weed out unrelated papers, peripheral references, materials that are not readily accessible (unrefereed conferences, non-English publications unless very significant, self-citations when one paper can yield references to rest of the authors' works, PhD theses when published papers are available, internal reports, etc.) Authors are encouraged to provide DRT references and IDS references since that demonstrates their knowledge of prior work in the area and simplifies access to the cited works by the readers. The Handbook of Industrial Drying can be cited if the authors want to cite a general reference instead of citing a number of other papers.
The total number of references must be consistent with the scope of the work. Recommended limits are no more than 20 for a full paper unless required for clarity.

Is it OK to include words from the title in the keyword list?

No. Make the list useful for someone who wants to carry out a computerised search of literature. Do not include unrelated topics either.

Can I send the manuscript in electronic form?

Not yet.

As for now when a revised manuscript is submitted, please include a diskette containing an electronic version of your manuscript, which must match the hard copies (2 hard copies should be submitted) exactly. Separate text from artworks and tables in hard copies as well as the soft copy. Since the journal is now e-journal, it is even more critical that the format rules are followed closely. Papers may be delayed or even rejected if they do not conform to ALL requirements of the manuscript.

Please visit this web page from time to time for any minor changes that may take effect.

Who do I submit my paper to?

Authors from USA may send their papers to Associate Editor L.R. Genskow (see address on journal masthead). Authors from Europe should send their papers to Associate Editor M. Roques and others should send their papers to the Editor-in-Chief A.S. Mujumdar. Additional Associate Editors may be named in the near future to streamline and speed the manuscript processing time. Revised manuscripts and diskettes should generally be sent to Dr. A.S. Mujumdar unless otherwise advised.

Do I get a free copy of the issue I publish my work in?

Only the first author (senior author) will get a complimentary copy. This can take some time so please do not contact editors about this matter. You can also order reprints from the publisher. So far there is no page charge for publication in this journal.

Are IDS or other Drying Conference papers available in DRT?

Only a small fraction of papers presented at major drying meetings find their way in DRT after review and revision. In fact, we typically accept only about 15% of the papers presented at the meeting for a special issue of DRT. Although over 300 papers were in IDS2000 program, DRT will publish only about 35-40 of these after a careful selection process, for example.
