DSS: A BRIEF HISTORY | ||||||||||||
DSS Department started working here in 1979 as Department of Strategic Studies. Dr Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, former Chairperson of Department of International Relations, QAU, and currently, President, Islamabad Peace Research Institue, was its Founder-Chairperson. It started M.Sc. classes in Strategic Studies in 1980. Brig Basit became Chairperson in 1981 when the Department was renamed as DSS whereas Brig SK Malik assumed the post in 1984. Dr Shirin S Mazari took over the post in August 1988 and was replaced by Dr Zafar Iqbal Cheema in 1994. Dr Rifaat Hussain took over the charge in 2000. From April 2002 to August 2003, Mr Rasheed Khalid was its In-charge/Chairperson. Dr Rifaat Hussain again held the post of Chairperson in September 2003 to February 2004. Mr Rasheed Khalid was In-charge after him till October 2005 when Prof Zafar Iqbal Cheema who is also Dean of Social Sciences took over as Chairperson of the Department. Department started M.Phil program in 1999 and PhD programme was first advertised for HEC-qualified candidates as well as general public in December 2004. The Department is now running M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes and admissions are made twice a year. The Department is in the process of building its Computer Lab and hopefully will have one in 2006. |

INTRODUCTION | ||||||||||||
Since its establishment in 1980 the Department has awarded M.Sc. degrees to 107 officers of the Armed Forces and 484 civilians. Thereby, it has made a significant contribution to the development of national expertise in the fields of defence and security studies. The academic training imparted by the Department is geared towards the development of requisite academic knowledge, analytical ability for evaluation of national, regional and international strategic environment and policies. Since 1980, 66 M.Sc. theses and 525 Seminar Papers have been written on wide-ranging subjects in the field of Defence, Strategic and Security Studies. A vast majority of these theses dealt with policy-oriented issues of contemporary strategic importance. The quality of the theses and Seminar Papers has been very good and widely appreciated. Apart from its highly successful Master's degree programme, the Department since 1998 has also been running an M. Phil programme. The Department continues to work in close liaison with the Armed Forces and other national institutions in the related fields. The Department Faculty, in addition to its regular teaching, contributes research articles to various professional journals and delivers lectures at the National Defence College, Foreign Services Academy, Joint Services Staff College Islamabad and Staff College Quetta. Since 1989, four faculty members have attended a six-week seminar on 'Conflict Resolution' in the Department of Peace and Conflict Resolution at Uppsala University in Sweden. One faculty member has attended a 10-day workshop on 'Sources of Conflict in South Asia: Ethnicity, Refugees, Environment' at Regional Centre for Strategic Studies, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Two faculty members obtained Ph.D. degrees; one in 1987 and another in 1991. The Department organized an International Conference on "Peace and Security in South Asia After India Pakistan Nuclear Tests" in collaboration with Hains Siedel Stiftung (Germany) December 03-05, 1998.
