The original Sinister Citadel is destroyed in this story.
As Mantis grovels before Darkseid and Green Lantern lays unconscious
in the background, Manhunter and the Secret Society emerge from the hidden
bunker and attack. Darkseid offers to spare Mantis if he defeats the Secret
Society for him. As the battle begins, Manhunter makes every effort to
reach Darkseid. Star Sapphire and Captain Comet intervene, moving Manhunter
to a strategic hiding place, but Star Sapphire is rendered unconscious.
Captains Cold and Boomerang and Mirror Master engage Mantis, besting him
before Darkseid. As Mantis gathers his energy for a second attack, he is
beseiged by Captain Comet who defeats him. While Darkseid is distracted
by Mantis defeat, Manhunter attacks, relentless grappling the more powerful
villain. Disdainfully, Darkseid summons a boom tube to transport him back
to Apokolips and, as he enters it, Manhunter pursues. Revealing that his
entire body is an explosive, Manhunter detonates himself in an attempt
to destroy Darkseid, leaving only carnage in their wake.
Back at the Sinister Citadel, Flashman reveals his plans for the Secret
Society. In a litany of marketing jargon, Flashman proposes to promote
the villains and help them recover from bad publicity. Sinestro, finding
this monologue offensive, pushes the marketeer aside and makes his way
out of the Sinister Citadel. Meanwhile, Captain Comet is emerging from
the rubble of the battle with Darkseid and finds that both the Secret Society
and Mantis have disappeared. Finding Green Lantern, he rescues the Justice
Leaguer from the rubble and returns him to the JLA satellite. The heroes
relate the battle with Darkseid and the formation of the Secret Society
to the assembled JLAers. After a somewhat argumentative discussion, Hawkman
offers to give Captain Comet a graceful exit with a tour of the JLA satellite.
During the tour, they happen upon Green Lantern at a monitor station. As
a warning beacon lights up, the panel reveals Sinestro exacting final vengence
on the Secret Society by destroying San Francisco. Hawkman and Captain
Comet quickly depart to intercept the renegade, leaving Green Lantern to
monitor their progress.
While Sinestro focuses his efforts on the Sinister Citadel, Hawkman and
Captain Comet appear in the sky behind him. He attacks the heroes and quickly
disables Hawkman. As Captain Comet rescues his falling comrade, Sinestro
escapes to space. The Sinister Citadel, rocked on it's foundation by SInestro's
attack, begins to crumble. Only Captain Comet's intervention prvents the
structure from collapsing into the street. Between Earth and Mars, Sinestro
is again intercepted and engages in a battle of wills with Captain Comet
over a power ring construct. Marshalling his formidable telepathy, Comet
overrides Sinestro's command of his own power ring, rendering the villain
unconscious. As the two heroes take Sinestro into custody, Captain Comet
confides that the dissolution of the Secret Society has become personal
vendetta and that he shall never rest til the group is brought to justice.
