After the family business failed in the late 1920's, Johnny and Walter stowed away on a boat to New York. Johnny wanted to become an actor. He worked as a Wall Street runner, wrote poetry, drew cartoons, and eventually wrote lyrics for The Garrick Gaieties, a popular music and comedy revue. It was here that he met his wife Ginger.
Throughout his career Johnny returned to his native Savannah to visit family and friends. His love for Savannah was evident throughout his life in his contributions to local charities and his willingness to offer his services to the city. In 1962 the Chatham County Commission renamed the Back River to Moon River in his honor.
Johnny enjoyed success as a lyricist, vocalist, and businessman. His lyrics are still loved today. He said to be a good lyrists you should read, read, read. He included everything from comics to the classics. The works of Johnny Mercer are certainly classics. They have withstood the test of time. Many future generations will be able to enjoy the lyrics and music of Savannah's Huckleberry Friend.
