Tjololo (also known as the Rock Drift Male) is an approximately six year old male leopard, resident in the Mala Mala Reserve in South Africa. His boundaries encompass a large area, which he must patrol to keep other leopards from encroaching. Among his mates within his territory are the Chellahanga Female, Newington Female, White Cloth Female, Kapen Female, and the Paradise Valley Female. Some of the cubs known from his matings with these females are twin males with the White Cloth female, a female cub of Tjololo's and the Kapen Female and two sons with the Paradise Valley Female.
Tjololo is known by Kim and crew, also by the rangers of Mala Mala as an exceptionally caring father. He visits often with his cubs and is gentle and obviously devoted to them. This is rather unusual with male leopards, and serves to endear Tjololo with those who know him and who have seen him in contact with his cubs.
He is an easily recognizable leopard. The first things that give him away are his ears...they are torn and tattered from many scraps with other animals. His right ear is more chewed up than the left. Other distinguishing features are his whisker spots. There are three on the right side of his face over the whisker line, and one on the left side. Then, a distinct marking, caused by placement of his spots, is the very obvious "U" on his forehead..this marking can be observed clearly when he is seen head-on. |
