History of the International MOMS Club
The MOMS Club (MOMS Offering Moms Support) is an international, non-denominational, non-profit organization aimed at providing support for mothers who have chosen to stay home and raise their children. Mary B. James of Simi Valley, California founded the MOMS Club in 1983. She wanted to meet at-home mothers like herself, but couldn’t find any groups of women that met during the day and allowed her to bring her children. She thus decided to start her own organization for at-home mothers and as a result the MOMS Club was born. The Club was so successful that she and many other volunteers reached out to stay-at-home mothers throughout the United States and helped them start their own MOMS Clubs. The MOMS Club became a national organization in 1985 and an international one in 1996. There are now over 2,000 MOMS Club chapters in the United States, along with several international chapters, and over 100,000 members! |
History of the MOMS Club of Dudley & Webster
The MOMS Club of Dudley & Webster officially began in October 2002, when we split from our sister chapter, the MOMS Club of Sturbridge. Lisa Provost joined the MOMS Club of Sturbridge after hearing about it from a friend. Lisa had been looking for some type of playgroup for her children, as she had just moved to Dudley from Southbridge. Her twin girls were infants and her eldest daughter was 2 years old; it was difficult and rather far for them to travel to Spencer and the Brookfields (areas which the MOMS Club of Sturbridge serves) for play dates and other activities. Lisa thus inquired about a club in her area in order to lessen travel time and meet other local stay-at-home moms. The board members of the MOMS Club of Sturbridge encouraged Lisa to start a chapter, and Lisa did just that! Lisa’s friend Laurie became the Treasurer and Dawn, a member of the Sturbridge chapter, became the Secretary. There were 17 moms at the first meeting in October 2002. Today, our chapter includes nearly 40 members and continues to grow. |
