Trapping Racoon

1.Finding Masked Bandits:

Racoons are found in just about all regions of North America. Getting out and doing a little scouting is the best way to start. Follow creek banks and look for their tracks. Another thing you might consider is start by asking local farmers if they have any 'coon problems. Many farmers are more than happy to let you get the 'coons that are eating their corn. Be sure not to make sets that will attract the local pets. My favorite set is listed below.

2.Baits & Lures:

My favorite bait to use is rancid fish such as whole shad, minnows, or sardines. I also use beaver "medicine" (castor based lure) placed on a cotton ball, piece of wool, or white cloth. and then just a few drops of fox urine. This combo is DEADLY on 'coon!

3.Traps:

My favorite kind of coon traps is the Sleepy Creek #11 double long spring traps. These traps are the best for the dollar that I have found. The chain is fastened to the base of the trap rather than on the spring. But Victors and Dukes work well also. The smallest trap I would use is a #1 single spring but suggest a little larger. The largest trap I would use is a #2 double spring.
