A Quick Correction - padishahlapdog

Here's a quick correction regarding Last Unicorn Games' need for Dune demo-ers. Tammie Webb clarified that she will only need demo-ers for Gencon.

An, official, adjusted news blurb from LUG:

Last Unicorn Games needs YOU! Are you planning to attend GenCon 2000? If so, how would you like to receive your convention badge for free? If you are familiar with our line of games and enjoy teaching them to others, we want YOU to help us run our product demonstrations and other events at conventions and trade shows. In exchange for your help, your convention badge cost is on us!

The nitty-gritty: you make yourself available to us during the conventions to run five demonstrations or events for us, and we'll provide you with a convention badge and 100 Latinum redeemable for LUG product. You must provide your own transportation and/or lodging accommodations to and from the event. You will be provided with the necessary demonstration materials, including scenarios -- no original material is permitted. Our line of games includes, Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and COMING SOON, DUNE

If you want to participate, send an email with the words "convention support" in the subject line to twebb@lastunicorngames.com. Feel free to pass this offer on to your friends!

Dune Needs Players at Origins, GenCon - sherlock

Tammie Webb, one of Last Unicorn's most vocal salespersons is looking for anyone who plans on attending Origins or GenCon (or both) to help with running demo games of the Dune RPG. Send her an email if you will be going to one of these conventions.

Amazon Posts September Release Date - sherlock

Padishahlapdog checked on Amazon.com's entry for the Dune RPG core book and found a release date of September 1. It is uncertain whether this date was set by Amazon, LUG or someone else. Amazon had no comment about the origin of the release date.

Intentions (and further delays?) - padishahlapdog

This will likely be old news to a number of you. But, considering the lack of Dune Rpg news lately, this information deserved some coverage here.

As of June 5th, 2000, Wizards of the Coast officially announced their intention to acquire Last Unicorn Games. Neither company has publicly commented on the 'transaction' and the deal is set to close the end of this month.

As you'd expect, fans of Lug's Trek Rpgs have been outspoken in their concern for the future of Lug and their finely-crafted products. In an effort to quell wild rumors, Steven Long (Lug DS9 developer) provided this post on Trekrpg.net:

Y'all are certainly welcome to speculate about the deal as much as you like, but I hope you'll understand if, for the time being, our only official response can be "no comment." As the press release noted, the deal is at the Letter of Intent stage, and until all final details are agreed upon and the relevant persons sign on the dotted line, we can't respond to any posts or provide any further info.

So, in short, don't construe our silence on the matter as either affirmation or denial of any particular position.

Steve Long
DS9 RPG Line Developer for LUG

At this point it's uncertain what affect this acquisition will have on Lug's Dune Rpg line. Judging from some comments made, it appears that Dune is on the road to printing (right behind Red Alert!) and we should see it released in the same format as was originally intended: using Lug's game mechanic, the Icon System.

A number of fans have already speculated about the future of the Trek and Dune line. Wizards has made their intention clear, within the past few months, that they intend to unify their Rpg releases by developing a universal Rpg game mechanic (referred to as the D20 system). So it bears to reason that we might see changes to Lug's products in the years to come. Whether that means 'mirrored' releases from Wizards (reprintings of the Trek and Dune core books and supplements to comply with the D20 system) or the possible extinction of the Icon System.

The next few months are going to be very interesting.

Dune Joins Trek - sherlock

The wonderful people who established a community at TrekRPGNet for the Last Unicorn Trek RPG modules have done it again with DuneRPGNet. Currently, it only utilizes a message board since there is no product yet, but expect to see it develop into a Dune site archive of everything you've come to expect from TrekRPGNet.

Dune RPG printing delayed- Padishahlapdog

Here's a recent comment from Lug's Art Director regarding the release of the Dune Rpg:

"The book is off to press and we expect it later next month. No firm date from our printer yet."

I took it upon myself to email George Vasilakos to inquire more deeply (and politely express some outrage) at the recent word of delays to Dune’s release. Here’s his response:

“Yes both books have gone to the printer but the printers priority , as LUGs current priority, is to make sure RED ALERT gets printed first. That’s as much as I know. The legal stuff with Dune has been settled. That is why the book is off to press.”

So our anticipated game has had to take a short hiatus on the back-burner while Lug releases their Red Alert! Disc game. Which from a business standpoint I can understand. Red Alert looks to be a product that will have fantastic sales and I can see Lug’s emphasis in getting that out to market quickly. From a Duner standpoint, it’s definitely disappointing to hear Dune’s not at the top of Lug’s priority list. But, I guess 2nd place on the list is far better than being last place. We’ll see the Sleeper awaken soon enough.
