The Company
General Motors Holden (GMH) is owned by General Motors Corporation, Detroit, Michigan. In 1914 Holden produces its first complete custom-made car body. By 1917 they commenced large-scale production of car bodies and by 1925 they had becomes the biggest bodybuilding operation outside North America and Continental Europe.

In 1945 GMH responds to the Australian Federal Government invitation to produce an Australian car. On 29 November 1948, an ivory colored motor car appear from behind silver curtains to the strains of a ten-piece orchestra. The car was the first Holden, destined to become Australiašs first successfully mass-produced car. It was known as the FX and was a six-cylinder four-door, six-seater sedan.

In 1999 GMH produced 128,202 vehicles and 338,263 engines. Total sales revenue was A$3.8 Billion (approximately U$1.9 Billion) with a net profit of A$166.1 Million (approximately U$83 Million).
Torana, in the begining...
It all began in 1964 with a tinny little borebox called the Vauxhall Viva.  It was a Pommie design which GM-H latched onto in its quest for a small car to sell alongside the EH.  The EH was a phenomenal success but Holden was worried about having all its eggs in the big car basket.

The first model, the strangely styled HA Viva, soon gained a reputation for unreliability and became something of an automotive joke.  So Holden decided not to call the next (much improved) version the HB Vauxhall Viva.  Instead, it named it a Holden and did some local research to come up with the name Torana - meaning, in Aboriginal, to fly.

The fact that the somewhat gutless HB Torana didn't fly was not the slightest  concern of the marketing guys.

The LY Torana - lets hope that it only ever remains a joke!
Thank god that the LY Torana was only a joke played by Street Machine in 2002, the Oatley Torana Club now only hope that Holden never produce such a car.  They should leave the Torana name to the 70's and if they can't come up with another name they should look at hireing a new marketing manager!!  Just look at what the mighty Torana of the seventies could have turned into, a disgrace if you ask me.
How could this seriously ever represent any one of the Torana model's of the 70's?
