Done in 1983 this video was the template for the typical “modern art” 80’s video to follow. During the decade the video was copied more than Madonna’s style, and that’s saying a lot. The set is very modern art and the five of the band members wear matching outfits. The overall effect is a simple but striking feeling to the video. Best looking: Simon C: Andy was the best looking. I like his name. K: That’s because your boyfriend’s name is Andy. C: So? Artistic factor: 6 Dress: K: I like how they all match! Very spiffy. C: Get the ties out of the shirts! T: The bowler hats are so lovely and British. B: I like the bowler hats. K: So do I. It reminds me of that painting “The Faceless Man in the Bowler Hat” that was in the Thomas Crowne Affair. Talk about tons of men in bowler hats! You know that had Pierce in it. . . B: Yes, I know. T: The blue and black makes the outfits look like uniforms. Speaking of uniforms those soldier outfits were fantastic. K: I thought they were hideous! Comments: B: The beginning looks like Simon is walking around on someone’s scalp. The poles look like hair follicles. C: I like them. I also like the red ball through the black and white, neat contrast. K: The colors are very basic. Oh no! Simon is doing that point thing again! C: What point thing? K: You’ll see, he does it a lot. B: More kids! C: It’s a theme. T: Naked babies watching Girls on Film is just wrong. B: Why are they showing their other videos? Did they run out of film for the song or something? T: Yes, they need to quit repeating other videos. Over all grade: C+ (We know it’s the original of the 80’s modern art video but we’ve seen it to much.)
Done in 1983 this video is easily forgettable. It’s a fantastic theme done in the middle of a dessert and “below” it. Best looking: Roger C: Ha! Andy was much better. K: (Rolls her eyes.) I like Simon in it. B: Sorry Roger looks good in this video. He should have kept those blonde tips. K: Yeah it’s a nice look. T: What about John? Artistic factor: 4 Dress: C: Yummy! K: Rugged and sexy! B: Nice but Simon’s scarf was to feminine. T: Simon looks good but John, wow! K: Did you happen to notice those terrible red gloves John was wearing? T: Who notices gloves when John is in leather? K: Touché! Comments: All: The beginning sucks! C: That parrot lizard thing is yucky. And what with the bell hop? K: Who knows? I don’t even think that Simon does. T: That lizard isn’t cool. Nasty! K: Ooo the underground liar looks like Star Wars! B: Kids again. C and B: I like the juggler! T: The illustrations that show up on the screen are rather interesting. Over all grade: C C: That was a pointless video and a waist of my time. B: It didn’t make any sense. T: It was weird.

Produced and made in 1983 this video and song was about a communist state and it’s eventual overthrow by an underground organization headed by, you guessed it, front man Simon. Filmed in West Germany it had a real communist, secret police feel to it. Best looking: Simon C: Andy! K: You mean you actually like those red shoes? T: John. Artistic factor: 9 Dress: K: Simon looks absolutely delicious! I love his look in this and I want a pair of those boots he wears at the beginning. B: The motorcycle chick had cool clothes on to. T: The black leather was fantastic. So were the trench coats. C: I liked Andy’s clothes! K: They all looked stylish. B: Definitely the best so far. Comments: We all agreed that the motorcycle and Simon on it was just to sexy. Christi sums it up very nicely with… C: Oh yeah! K: This video and the story behind it is just awesome. They all look like the’re having fun at the end. B: Yeah what’s with that? We’ll just break out and do a little tap dance in the middle of a military coup! K: I like it! C: Why do the communist guards have light sabers? T: I’m not digging the light sabers. However John looks like James Bond. K: So does Simon. Oh yummy! T: John and Simon look fantastic! K: Yeah! Torrey and Kim: sigh! Over all grade: A B: It made sense! K: It’s just cool. C: Andy looks really good. K: AHHH!

This video was filmed during an arena concert in 1983, which was the height of their popularity. Know what that means? The crowd is filled with 10 trillion screaming teenage girls. Oh Yeah! I want to be there! Opps, no personal comments during this part. Best looking: Mixed reviews K: John and Simon B: John C: Andy T: John, although he needs to cut his hair. Artistic factor: 4 (not very original save the couple in chains on the screen above the stage.) Dress: C: I like Simon’s white shirt. K: Yeah he looks good. But check out the leather pants on John. Can we say HOT! B: But seriously, what were they thinking in the 80’s? And Andy cut your hair! T: The hair needs to stay in the 80’s. K: Nick’s sweater looks like something the cat dragged in. T: I would have to agree with that. The sweater is just gross. Comments: K: The jump at the beginning was sweet. B: Shocking! Simon’s dancing is in rhythm. K: The energy in this video is great. C: Adrenaline. I don’t like the concert videos, they’re boring. B: Andy, AHHH! K: He’s scary! So’s Nick. T: Nick and Andy need to take a vacation from this video. K: There goes Simon doing that Finger pointing thing again. They also have this theme of female dominance. I dig it. B: The girl back ups are good. T: I don’t dig the singers. And what is with the water fall? Talk about tacky! C: Very bad animation on the waterfall. Over all grade: B Christi was bored with it., Bernadette was frightened by the fashion, Torrey liked the song, and Kim loved the video. K: Hey, the song is awesome.
