Chapter 2
“Duran forever!!!”
“What the.. Kat, Kat sit down.  For God’s sakes you’re going to fall out, Mary!  Get Kat in here.”
“Simon’s hot!!!”  Down the road they tore the three girls, with Kat hanging out the top of the convertible.  Kim shook her head and tried to concentrate on driving while Mary tried to read a map to find the Rio.  Finally sitting back down Kat was able to talk to the girls.
“The Rio is right in front of us.”  She pointed to a giant building with red and blue lights shining on the side, despite the fact it was three in the afternoon.  Only in Vegas.
“Why couldn’t you have told me a second before Kat darling.” Mary said carefully folding the map back into place.
“I was busy professing my love to the God Le Bon.”  Kim and Mary nodded in understanding then right at that moment a woman laughed on the radio and it didn’t take the girls very long to fall into beat with the music.
“Darken the city night is a wire! Steam in the subway earth is afire!  Woman you want me give me a sign, and catch my breathing…”
“As I check your behind!!!”  Kat sang out melodiously above the other two.
“KAT!!!”
“Well, I wish Simon was checking mine out.”  The girls broke into a chorus of laughter as they pulled up into the drive.
“So you think this is going to be difficult?”  Mary asked looking over at Kim who tossed the keys to a valet giving him a wink that made him crack up laughing.
“Man I’m smooth.”  Kim said sarcastically. “Piece of cake.  She’s a loony but we’ll be fine.  No sweat.”

Knocking on the door once Kim noticed it open on it’s own so the girls wasted no time in entering.
“Hello?”  Kim said in a high pitched inquiry that ended in a squeak.
“Kim did anyone ever tell you how incredibly annoying your voice is?”  Kat said cringing.
“You never seemed to mind when we talked on line.”
“That’s because you typed what you said you idiot!”
“Oh yeah, right.” Kim said smiling with the realization.  Mary just shook her head.  Then a shadow loomed in the doorway.  It was not midnightboat but a hulking man with a bald head.
“Warren’s really big brother.” Kat whispered hiding behind Kim and Mary.  Kim smirked then quickly hid her smile as she realized the bald man in the sunglasses was looking right at her.
“Um, we’re here to see…”
“This way.”  He said in a deep voice.  The girls followed him into a large parlor like room to find midnightboat lounged on a couch.  She was a striking lady with deep black hair who seemed to have glowing eyes.  Her words were less than kind however.
“You were the worthy ones sent to take on the challenge?”
“Yeah.  What of it?”  Kat said stepping out from behind Kim and Mary then quickly ducking back behind when the big man looked in her direction.
“Who was this fearless knight I spoke to on  the phone?”
“Um, me mame.”
“You don’t look like a fearless knight, what makes you think you are worthy of the backstage passes?”
“Well, um…”
“We are from STR.  The younger more rebellious Duran Duran fan set.  We are the biggest second-generation fans there are.  That’s what makes us worthy.”  It was Mary who stood proud and tall as she told of the group she herself had started so long ago.
“Fine then fearless knight, answer a few questions if you might.”  Kat went wide eyed and whispered into Kim’s ear,
“Whoa! Now she’s speaking in rhythms!  Where did you dig up this old bird?”
“Shh, Kat.  We’ve got to be cool, so you can drool, backstage with Simon the bull.”
“Cute Kim.” Kim nodded back then looked over at midnight boat.
“I’m ready.  Bring it on.”  Kim took a deep breath hoping she hadn’t gotten in over her head, she wasn’t exactly a genius when it came to Duran trivia, she left that to the ones that legally changed there name to Le Bon and camped out on their lawns in boxes.
“What is John’s real name?”  Kim cracked up suddenly realizing her fear was completely misplaced.
“Are you serious?  That’s it?  How easy is that, any Duranie knows that one.  I mean comeone Nigel, how hard is that!  Oops,”  She was now getting sarcastic, obnoxiously so, “Was that the name I heard?  Nigel.  I do believe it was uh, Nigel Jonathan Taylor, thank you very much.  I mean for God’s sake my bass is named Nigel…”
“And how do spell Nigel?”  Kim stopped midword leaving her mouth hanging wide open.  Her eyes soon followed suit and she quickly looked as though she had seen the end coming.
“Uh, well, umm…”

“God Kim, I can’t believe you misspelled Nigel.  Not the painter you putts, Nigel!  How hard is it to spell Nigel.”  The girls were being escorted out by the big Warren but Kat moved slowly.  She was too appalled that Kim had misspelled such an easy word.
“So I got him mixed up with the guy that did the Rio cover, come on… Mary you understand don’t you?”  She turned and looked to Mary for support but Mary only gave a blank stare.
“It really wasn’t that hard Kim.”
“Oh fine!”  She stomped out the rest of the way and waited for the girls to make their way out the door.  Finally making it Big Warren almost shut the door when he suddenly stopped then pulled off his glasses looking secretively from one girl to the next.
“You promise not to tell on me ladies?”  He said in a gentle whisper.
“Yeah, we promise.”
“Cross our hearts.” Kat whispered back.
“Spill it.” It was Kim who was in no mood to be toyed with.
“I think my lady was being a bit well harsh with you ladies.  You know she’s one of those old school, had to be there Duranies, you understand.”  They all nodded in unison, one of the few things young Duranies did get in life.  “Well um, she actually doesn’t have the tickets, one of her good friends has them.  She gave them to her she doesn’t need them, she already has hers.  Let me give you her phone number.”  The huge version of Warren handed Mary a piece of paper then looking around quickly shut the door on the three girls leaving them out in the hall.
