DurumPoppers all started when the founder & CEO of Indian Maid Foods was a little girl. Her grandmother Pearl would make a snack from wild rice that she would pop in a cast-iron skillet on their wood stove. One blizzarding night in 1995, Carol wanted something crunchy to snack on. The weather was too bad to go out to buy anything. She had no popcorn. But she had some durum.

She remembered the snack her grandmother used to make, & decided to see if she could make something similar from the durum. The result was good enough to encourage her to begin developing DurumPoppers.

Over the next 2 years, she refined the results on friends at gatherings. She developed the product, the production process, & designed & built the production equipment. (Our founder/CEO has a wide variety of skills & doesn't daunt easily.)

In 1997, she took samples to a business friend & asked his opinion.
He liked them. He passed them to his business friends & they liked them. Everyone encouraged her to form a company & put them on the market.

In March 2000, she & some friends incorporated Indian Maid Foods & began searching for funds to build a production facility. Despite several rejections from "traditional" majority-culture sources of funding, including some plainly "because the CEO is an Indian female" & "because Indian Maid Foods' mission is to provide jobs for the true Native North Dakotans & a profitable market for ND durum producers" (!), we continue to produce DurumPoppers and build Indian Maid Foods.

Our problem is not to develop market! It is to fill the market demand for this unique product!

Supermarkets & Health foods stores love them. DurumPoppers are great for diabetics, people with high cholesterol, or anyone who is health-conscious. Some overweight friends told her she had invented "diet foods with flavor!" since they come in 10 "real" flovors, rather than 'candy flavors'. Their concentrated nutrition & high fiber content make them ideal for disaster/survival foods. Dogs love them & beg for them!

Store-to-store canvassing for dealers is time-consuming & inefficient. So -
