CHLORIDE  &  GOLDROAD
                    GOLDROAD
Gold was discovered in Goldroad in 1899 by Jose Jarez and partner Henry Lovin.  The town of Goldroad sprung up nearby.  In 1901, they sold their claim for $50,000.  Within 5 years, their claim was worth over $2,000,000.  By 1907, the gold veins were giving out.  The town began to disappear in the desert.  Today, there are many remains of rock houses and a stone coolhouse still under roof.  Goldroad is located on private property, but tours are available, just look for the signs.
                 CHLORIDE
In the 1860's silver chloride ore was discovered at what is now called Silver Hill.  By 1864, the town of Chloride was in full swing.  By 1873, Chloride was granted a post office.  By 1900, Chloride had a population of 2,000.  The mines produced until the 1940's, when all the mines closed up.  Most residents moved away, but a few have chosen to stay behind.  The post office still operates.
Today at Chloride, you can still see the post office, the 1928 Russel General Store, an old gas station, an original jail and residence and a cemetary.
