Thursday, February 26th, 2004 - Three Years Old
In our Human Development class, we just started studying development in kids ages two through six. To demonstrate some of the concepts, our professor brought in her three-year-old son to class. After some experiments with Play-doh and pennies, we watched an episode of Sesame Street; we were to take note of teaching methods, attention-grabbing techniques, etc. I think that this was also to keep Elijah (her son) occupied since our lecture is an hour and fifteen minutes.
I used to watch Sesame Street when I was younger, and although I remember faint glimpses, I mostly had forgotten the show. It was absolutely hilarious to see again, and not in the "oh man that's cheesy" way but in the truly funny way. I found myself laughing just as much, and maybe more, as Elijah. There were a couple of times when the whole class laughed, but it seemed that most of the time it was just him and me. A revelation dawned on me: everything is funny to me because I still have the humor sense of a three-year-old mixed with the understanding of a young adult. It seems that the only time I don't laugh is when I don't "get it" since I'm too busy thinking really hard. It's alright though, because I will burst with laughter a few hours later.
