Well here it is September 3,2001. Another Summer has come and gone. Think back to when we were kids! The summers seem to last a while longer. We looked forward to Labor Day festivities. Maybe it was just going to the local park to enjoy music, games and food. Maybe it was just to visit a relative and have dinner and relax and play with our cousins. Not to Grammy, no it was the time to go to the farmers and buy sweet corn to preserve. Buying that at the end of the season meant a big savings and if the pears were ready for picking which they always were a few baskets went with us to do some trading. This was the norm for our family and others.

This came back to mind today when we went to the local flea market to get some fruit and corn. The gentleman who had a small very used van was selling his corn right out of plastic “burlap” bags.”$3.50 a dozen maam, and it’s only a few hrs old. Bring it here myself from a farmer in Snydersville. Now if you want to freeze some I can give you a bag for $12.00. That would be about 60 ears". Of course grammy would have said get it! Well I don’t want to freeze 60 ears for just the two of us. He loaded my bag and said I give 13 ears to the dozen, unless your superstitious then I’ll give you 14” I replied “13 is my lucky number and it doesn’t scare me." As we walked back to the car my husband said. “Hon, he gave you 14 ears, just for luck.” I just smiled.

As we walked through the flea market I watched the people selling their wares. What a variety! Not that I haven’t been at this flea mkt. Before,I have ,. The same faces, almost the same wares. Almost the same prices.

The faces today looked tired. It had been a long hot ,rainy summer. We passed by the mkt several times on weekends and saw vendors setting up Friday nite in the rain and hoping for a clear weekend, no such luck some weekends and sometimes just showers enough to keep some folks away.
