Several years ago my daughter gave me the
famous poem, Warning, by Jenny Joseph.
She said, “Mom, this is you!”
The poem starts out, “When I am an old woman I shall wear
purple...with a red hat...”, and goes on to say that I will do all these
strange atrocities like “gobbling up samples in shops, setting off alarm bells,
picking flowers in other people’s gardens, and learning to spit.” Needless to say, I loved the poem, and have had
it hanging on my wall ever since. I
stopped one day and read it, as I sometimes do, and decided to surf the
Internet for information about the poem and the author. To my surprise and delight, I came upon the
Red Hat Society
page and found that I was not alone in my love for the poem. The Red Hat Society began as a result of Sue Ellen
Cooper, who woke up one day and found herself not needing to please people or
live up to their expectations. Sparked
by the poem, and to celebrate her new revelation, she bought herself a funky
red hat and wore it when she went out with her women friends. And so it
began…the idea to greet middle age with vitality, humor, and flair; to live
by the rule that there are no rules; and to attend all functions in full
regalia, red hat and purple outfit. Today, over 2000 chapters of women have followed suit all over
the In true
fashion, I immediately emailed Paulette Swartz and asked her if she was
game. Of course, she said “Yes!” She said that Pat Merritt would be up for
it as well. We’ve been off the ground
and running from that day on, and loving every minute of it! |
What can I say…
Several of the stores had purchased specialty items, knowing we
were coming. The hat kiosk ordered in several red hats, pins, scarves, and
other neat items, which was fantastic. So if you are having a difficult time
finding a red hat, head to West Acres, ladies!!
From red hats to purple purses, we found everything!!
Mall shoppers, both male and female, were curious about our
groups. By the end of the day, most of
us felt like celebrities because we had posed for so many pictures. We laughed on our way home that this is what
“stardom” must be like!
After the mall and a couple other quick shopping stops, it was on
to the Outback for a bite to eat. There
we met up with our sister chapter’s and enjoyed a wonderful meal, lots of
laughs, and a few good stories. We
shared some ideas of things we could do together again, and promised we would
keep in touch and plan another outing together real soon.
I set up a special Fargo Gathering
page just for the pictures of this special get-together, and if any of the
other chapters send me pictures they took, I will continue to add to that page.
Thank you to all the chapters and their Red Hatters who made the
day a wonderful success!!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! Our Dames came up with the wonderful idea of
each choosing a month they would like to plan an event for. Each
member was given a list of e-mail addresses or phone numbers for our members
so they can be contacted once the event is set up. We are so excited to see
what interesting outings or entertainment is planned for us! MONTH PLANNERS January Queen Dee February Pat Harp March Paulette

“When I'm An Old Lady And Live With My Kids”
When I'm an old lady,
I'll live with each kid,
And bring so much
happiness...just as they did.
I
want to pay back all the joy they've provided.
Returning each deed!
Oh, they'll be so excited!
(When I'm an old lady
and live with my kids)
I'll write on the wall
with reds, whites and blues,
And I'll bounce on the
furniture...wearing my shoes.
I'll drink from the
carton and then leave it out.
I'll stuff all the
toilets and oh, how they'll shout!
(When I'm an old lady
and live with my kids)
When they're on the
phone and just out of each,
I'll get into things
like sugar and bleach.
Oh, they'll snap their
fingers and then shake their head,
And when that is done,
I'll hide under the bed!
(When I'm an old lady
and live with my kids)
When they cook dinner
and call me to eat,
I'll not eat my green
beans or salad or meat,
I'll gag on my spinach,
spill milk on the table,
And when they get
angry...I'll run...if I'm able!
(When I'm an old lady
and live with my kids)
I'll sit close to the
TV, through the channels I'll click,
I'll cross both eyes
just to see if they stick.
I'll take off my socks
and throw one away.
And play in the mud til
the end of the day!
(When I'm an old lady
and live with my kids)
And later in bed, I'll
lay back and sigh,
I'll thank God in
prayer and then close my eyes.
My kids will look down
with a smile slowly creeping,
And say with a groan,
"She's so sweet when she's sleeping".
God Bless All Moms and
Grandmas Everywhere!
