Bumper
Modification for 2nd
Generation Integra
2-13-00
The
Story
When
I was originally looking for my Acura Integra, I was looking for
a 92-93. The reason was because the much better looking bumpers and lights.
Well unfortunately at the time of my search, these 92-93 Integras were
not within my budget, so I bought a used 1991 Acura Integra. After two
years of ownership I decided to do some modifications to my car. (I don't
know why I waited so long?) Anyways, I learned a lot from doing some work
on my own car and working on friend's cars. I came across a deal I couldn't
refuse. I met a guy through the Recycler
Classifieds. His name is J.J. and he was selling a 92-93 front bumper
cover. He had modified his 1991 front bumper reinforcement, so it would
accept a 92-93 front bumper cover. I was very happy to find out that I
too could make my car look more attractive. So I asked for his advice on
how to do it. The modification isn't hard at all. Anyone who is pretty
handy with tools and has a sense of what they are doing, can perform this
modification. I have put pictures here to help anyone who wants to perform
the modification on their car.

Before
the bumper modification
Below are
pictures of what the 1990-91 Integra looks like with their original production
bumpers. These are pictures of Justin's 1990 Integra. Check out Justin's
G2 Integra Page he has other mods posted for the 2nd Gen Integra.
Converting
a 1990-91 Acura Integra into a 1992-93 Integra
Parts
needed: 92-93 Acura Integra front bumper cover, existing 90-91 Integra
reinforcement and styrofoam (a 92-93 styrofoam can be used, no cutting
required), and new turn signal lamps.
Total
Cost: $115 for the 92-93 bumper,$35 for the new clear turn signals,
and the reinforcement and styrofoam were free $0 because it was already
on my car which is a grand total of $150. (Prices may vary depending on
your sources.)
Tools
required: Phillips Screwdriver, Ratchet set, and a knife. Also use
an old piece of cloth to protect the bumper from getting new scratches
when laid on the ground.
Steps on Modification:
1. First
thing you want to do is remove both bumper turn signals. They will expose
two main bolts on each side of the car that hold the reinforcement together
with the frame of the car. Remove the corner lens to make it easier for
removal and installation on the new bumper(This will decrease the chance
of creating new scratches on the new bumper.) On each side of the bumper
where the wheel well is located remove two screws. Make sure you don't
loose any of the bolts or screws as you will need them for the new
bumper. On the bottom of the car remove two screws that hold the bottom
of the bumper in place. Okay once they are all removed. Put in a
safe place.

2. Now that all the screws have been removed, pull
the 1990-91 bumper away from the car and gently lay it on the floor facing
down.(Use the piece of cloth so the bumper won't get scratched.) The reinforcement
is attached to the bumper using 9 screws at the top and one in the center
by where the license plate bracket is attached in
the center of the grill. When all 10 screws are removed lift out the reinforcement,
and it will expose the styrofoam. Take it out and put it on the side. With
the knife cut away the excess material so it can fit the 92-93 Integra
bumper. I cut my styrofoam like for about an hour or so. (You can see that
mines broke at the bottom edge, but it is no problem.) It is a trial and
error method. Once you cut the styrofoam, you must check if it fits properly
in the new 92-93 bumper with the reinforcement over it in place. The reinforcement
should line up with the holes on 92-93 bumper cover. Once they all line
up, use the screws from the other bumper and put it together.
Note:
If you have access to a 92-93 styrofoam then no cutting will be required.
3. Now once all the screws are in place, you are almost ready to
install the 92-93 bumper on the car. You will need to tranfer the headlight
rubber trims from your old bumper to the new one(Best if you buy new ones
if they are warped.) You also need to transfer the screw clip holders for
the bumper turn signals on the new bumper. Now you are all done and ready
to install the bumper. If possible have a friend help with this by giving
you a hand. You will have to line up the holes for the reinforcement with
the holes on the frame of the car. Put a bolt in it's place and tighten
them. Don't tighten them hard, just enough to hold in place. Use the two
screws to attach the bumper to the two plastic sleeves, located near each
wheel well. Now that all screws are in place, lift the bumper up so that
the gap between the lights is no longer visble on both sides. Tighten the
main (4) bolts. You are almost done. Add the two bolts located underneath
the car. You will be left with one extra screw, the one that held the license
plate bracket. No need for that screw, save it for an extra. Add the new
turn signals, and you are done. By the way it would be a good idea to use
torx head screws in place of the phillips head screws for the turn signals
so they won't get stolen by thieves. I got both screws at Napa auto parts
for $1.50. I would recommend on getting some torx head screws as they are
a good investment. It would be a wise thing to install a set of JDM
one piece headlights while the bumper is off. They can only be installed
with the bumper off. You can also take out the Air Intake resonater box.
Here is what the finished product looks like with the 92-93 Integra front
bumper. Have fun!
