Like Toews' other work, The Highlanders painting is characterized by accurate conformation, lifelike facial expression, and especially a unifying glow of warm light achieved by using the glazing techniques of the old masters. Toews spends a significant amount of time researching her subject matter and may work from up to 30 photographs in the creation of a painting like this, taking months to complete it. Although apartment living has restricted Toews from having her own dogs, she has been enjoying her sister Marilyn O'Donnell's shelties since 1974. | ||||||||||||||||||
Artist's Biography: Lynda Toews was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1962. Her education includes a Graphic Arts Certificate and an Education Diploma, both from Red River Community College, a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree, and an Education Post-Baccalaureate Degree from the University of Manitoba. Toews is an artist of varied interests including portraiture, the human figure, animals, and nature. Her paintings have been shown in several Winnipeg galleries and she has created artwork for private collections locally, and internationally. She has also designed cassette/CD covers for Canadian musicians such as Dana Starkell and Jake Chenier. Some of Toews' drawings have been published in Other Voices, and Sophia magazines, and her art criticism has been published in The Plug In Harold. Her more recent projects include doing a prairie piece for Manitoba Government House, and painting a 130-foot mural of Canadian natural scenery for the Winnipeg International Airport's Transborder Lounge. Currently Toews is planning an exhibition on the theme of tall grass prairie conservation, and she is also working on a collector's series of Shetland Sheepdog paintings - puppies and performance prints to come. |
