Wire up your blinkers to the alarm
By: George (Androulakis from BimmerForums.com)
Assuming you can get to the wiring on the alarm siren, and you have a little bit of automotive electronics knowledge.
You need to get the positive wire going to the alarm (the one that supplies +12v when it chirps). You need to splice into that.
The best way to tap into wires - which maintains the stuctural integrity of the original wire is as follows.
Take a razor and carefully cut the insulation from about 1/2" of the wire at the location you want to splice into. Do not cut the wire, just peel the insulation.
Then take the wire and separate the strands in the center so it looks like this --------O-------
Where the dashed parts are still insulated wire, and the O represents the now separated copper strands, half on top, half on the bottom.
Insert the new wire you are adding into the O and twist around.
Then solder the exposed two wires together.
Afterwards carefully insulate with a GOOD electrical tape. Scotch super 33 is great for this.
You may also want to add a bit of wire loom and some zip ties.
This way you do not cut the original wires.
Then get yourself two relays.
Run +12v from a good source (charging post is good - MAKE SURE THIS IS FUSED!!! REPEAT MAKE SURE THIS IS FUSED!!!) to the relay terminal #87. (They are marked on the relay)
Run a wire from a grounding point to terminal # 85 on the relay.
Use the +12v feed from the alarm as the trigger on the relays - connect it to terminal #86.
Wire the switched output (relay terminal #30) to the corner lamps. (light grey wire with stripe on each side is the parking light, the other one is the blinker)
Now when the siren chirps, the parking lights will flash.
Make sure you insulate all of these connections. (Preferably used prewired relay sockets, which don't leave exposed relay terminals).
A good place to mount relays is on the battery tray (next to the charging post, in front of the DME).
Use wire loom to protect any new wires you added to the engine bay, and make sure to route them away from any moving or potentially hot parts.
Enjoy.
Take a look at this picture, this explains it, but, realize you will have to do this twice, because our cars use separate left and right parking light circuits. I.e. wire one relay to the right side parking lamp, and one to the left side. Also this picture denotes wiring into the parking light switch - the second circle in the circuit.
That is not neccesary, you can wire directly into the lighting circuit. This keeps all of the needed wiring under the hood.
Take care,
George
