THE COSTER AVENUE MURAL IN GETTYSBURG
Featuring the 154th NY & The 6th North Carolina at Kuhns Brickyard
The Coster Avenue Mural depicts the fighting between Coster's Union brigade and Avery's and Hays's Confederate brigades on the afternoon of July 1, 1863--an action that resulted in 770 combined casualties.  Mark H. Dunkelman researched and designed the mural; the final painting was done by artist Johan Bjurman and Mark H. Dunkelman.  The 80-foot mural, attached to a building adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park's Coster Avenue, was dedicated on July 1, 1988, and has been a well regarded (if still little known) interpretive feature on the First Day's battlefield.

Mark H. Dunkelman personally financed the production of the original mural , at a cost of about $5,000.  (In 1989, the president of the International Society of Fine Art Appraisers valued the mural at $250,000. Its Value to researchers, historians and tourists can not be estimated.) After more than a decade of exposure to the elements, the mural now needs to be refurbished.  Mr. Dunkelman estimates the expenses of travel, supplies, labor, and sundry costs will total approximately $3,500.

Your personal or group donation (check or money order payable to Mark H. Dunkleman) will be deposited in a special bank account until sufficient funds have been raised to finance the mural's restoration. Donors will be kept informed of the project's progress.  For more information, please contact Mark directly at NYVI154th@aol.com.  Thank you for your consideration and support.
